Brown trout are excellent to eat. The smaller ones are best.

We catch them in rivers out West but always let them go. Great Lakes fishing looks awesome.

Big browns are my favorite. I had a plank in the shed where I tacked up the heads of males that weighed 20 or better. Had a dozen or so and then ma threw it away when we had my brothers wedding.

On lake ontario it is wise to eat them in spring after they've had enough time to replenish fat reserves and get back that football shape. You will notice that lake caught footballs have a deep orange filet color versus the peach color filets you get out of the streams. Little skinny spawned out browns taste like dog shit in comparison I'm my wholehearted honest opinion.

20 lbers are pretty rare here, that's really sweet in my well balanced and thought out opinion.

When we get in shallow enough to fish for them, one of about 10 or so are pushing or breaking the 20 mark. The two in the top picture hit seconds apart from each other. Both were around 20. I've seen those porkers come clear out of the water, level with the transom.

Dumb fish too, they bite some chotched up stuff. They can really save your ass if you are fishing in close and the kings won't put out.

I was dissapointed that we never got in there to fish for them last season. We're slaves to the kings, where they go, we go, and the water never cooled down enough to bring them into the beach to mingle with the browns. Once you get outside 30 fow, your chances of catching a brown around here drop to pert-near nothing. I don't how many browns we caught last season, but I could count them on both hands. Made me sad.

I wish they would give us a couple more weeks to get after them. The big girls are probably really putting the feed on right now. In our part of the state, we have higher limits and no size restriction because pike are too abundant, why not let us fish when fishing is best?
