Sweet! How far out you have to go for yellow fin? What did they hit?

We were chunking butterfish in the Norfolk canyon approx 60 miles offshore.

That's awesome. Most the guys that catch them here have to run around 140 out to find good numbers.

Damn! The guys on the Oregon coast get pumped up when they are 17-30 miles out, 60 is about the max most go.

Know how deep they are at 60 miles out? We ran 80 just last weekend to get to decent blackfin water. What do they catch out there?

I was gonna say the same thing, thought it was around 20, they do overnight charters out of the west coast

I think I'd be good at 'chunking the canyon'.

We were fishing in 3,000 feet of water. Had baits down 50', 100', 150' and 200' from the surface. 100' baits seemed to get the most action. Broke off a horse of a fish after an hour and a half fight on 50 pound tackle. Guy who lost it was heartbroken.

Holy shit! Yeah we have to hit the floating rigs at 140 miles to get that depth. We were fishing in 400' at a rig catching tuna and went another 15ish miles to get to 800' to catch tiles. That is a doable trip for most offshore boats here but to hit the floaters and really fish them good is talking money.

Here in the mid Atlantic, we have a bunch of canyons that cut in towards the shore, so you can get pretty deep without going far. Got Baltimore Canyon, Wilmington Canyon, and Poor Mans Canyon all less than 70 miles. Pretty sure Baltimore Canyon is less than 60 miles from Ocean City, and that'll get you in almost 5,000 ft of water. I really wish I could tolerate deep sea fishing, because we're in a good place for it.

Hahahahahahahaha, wtf Bill? If that's your happy face, I'm afraid to see anything without a fish in hand.

Tile fish are so deep there is nothing to the fight anyways and you don't even know if you have a fish until you get it up, unless it's a decent one like I posted. They are really just a fish to load the box and are excellent on the table. Most people use the big ass electric reels and just press a button to bring them up. But those reels are not cheap.

Doesn't sound like fun. Might as well go crank a hay buggy wench and say I've been "fishing".

They supplement in addition to all the other tuna, amber jack, dorado, wahoo etc. Already going that far might as well bring back all you can. This time of year most everything I just listed is just making it's way back in with the warming water and tiles saved the trip this weekend. Caught plenty of amber jacks but all were just barely too small.
