While filleting up some crappie last night for dinner I found this.

Anyone know what it is?
I threw out the fish but would it still be safe to eat? I've been fishing since I was 4 and have never seen this before.

I don't recommend eating pennies but I don't think they will hurt you.

Haha!

But it was nice of him to put that worm in there for a size reference though.

I've had the little tan ones that look like rice before. I'll pop them out and eat the fish. Just never saw these before.

If there's even a remote chance that I'll later see something like that, now 7 feet long, hanging out of my ass, I'm not eating it. I don't care what the experts say.

This ^^ unless I'm already at risk of starting to death.

If there's a chance that little thing is hanging out of my ass I'm not eating the meat. It defiantly freaked me out.

No one has ever seen these before though?

It bothers me that you found it in a crappie. Up here they seem to be the cleanest of the sunfish. Rarely ever find wormy ones.

I wouldn't eat it either. Or I would feed it to company.

Was it in the meat? That looks like a bloodworm which fish love to eat.

yes, in the meat. I wouldn't care if it was stomach contents. It looked like a little red dot, I grabbed it and thats what came out.

Nevr seen that before either. It looks like a blodworm to me though. We get the rice looking ones and these little black balls also that gross me out. If I find one, it grosses me out and I have to throw every fish out. I just can't eat them. But we get seal worms in saltwater fish. I can just pick those out and move along. They don't bother me at all.

I was at an ice fishing derby a couple of winters ago and I was getting my perch measured for the "perch pot". One of the guys who was watching commented on what a great meal they were going to make. I offered them to him, and he asked why I didn't want them, he assured me they were delicious. I told him I wouldn't eat anything from that lake because the fish were full of worms. You could even see them through the skin. He wouldn't believe me that they were worms so I pulled out my knife and started filleting right there, pulling out worms and letting them wriggle on the table. That guy, along with a few onlookers didn't seem too eager to take those perch off my hands anymore, filleted and all.

I found this

Apparently someone else has seen these. The way he shows them in his pics is exactly how I found the one in my fish. There are a couple of links in the thread for more info. It says the fish is safe to eat but I think I'll not be eating any fish that has them.

Pretty much every fish you have eaten has a parasite of some kind in it somewhere. Cook it thoroughly and don't think about it. We see similar to those in our river walleye . I only see them in July and August, when the water is at it's warmest. I'll bet they are in the fish all year but are at a different stage in life and size so you just don't see/notice them.
Salmon are famous for the round worms. While in the salt water they are not visible. When they enter fresh water, the grow and turn white so people see them and freak out. They are mainly along the spine/backbone, back near the tail. Samr thing, cook them all the way through and no problem.
