Count down to summer fishing

Count down to summer fishing

Postby Woody » Thu Jan 09, 2014 10:00 am

Around 114 days.

Hunting is over here and now I'm getting cabin fever waiting for warm weather.

Organized and cleaned/polished some of the spoons the other day.

Got a new Lowrance Elite GPS/Fish finder for the boat.

Going to order a couple spools of lead core, a new hanging tackle box, new reel, and a rod holder.

My goal for this year is to get a 20+ pound king in the boat.

I see some winners in there. Post up a clear pic of all of them and I'll give you a rundown.

What kind of reel you going to put your ropes on? Are you going to tie them yourself?

Don't you have to have special eyelets and real for that?

jehler wrote:you have dipsy rods?

This year we will be running 1 or 2 dippsy rods, 2 or 3 down riggers and 2 planar boards. depending on what we can handle... last year we only ran 4 lines and that was enough to keep me busy sometimes.

Bill, I'll post those pics and answer your question about reels when I get home.

The rods I have for lead core were given to me by a family friend. He used them for lead core, but didn't use those anymore.

Maybe they would work for both?

Sure they would, just need room for the knots to go through the eyelet

For some reason I thought the eyelet needed to be a roller or a hardened steel for copper.

Well I look into copper instead then.

copper sinks more.

100 yds of lead core is probably getting you down 35 feet.

I wouldn't run copper on a small boat. I don't even like running it on a big boat but sometimes it's necessary.

Torpedo divers are another good way to go on planer boards if you don't want to ih copper or leadcore

The reel I planed to use is a Diawa 47LC, will that work?
Is there a reason not to tie them myself?

Here is my small collection of lures that I have built over the last year.
About 100 of the 120 spoons were given to me so they aren't in new condition, but they will do the trick (I think).

Woody, start a lure building thread. This appeals to me.

Is that a serious request?

I was referring to the "building" of the collection, but I do tie my own flies, I replace some of the hooks with higher quality ones, and I have the stuff to paint/tape my own spoons. Also I could easily cut and stamp some sheet metal into spoons. If you really want, but I think you were joking.

That's what I'm talking about.

Woody, I was being serious, but I thought you made those yourself. I've seen some made out of spoons and old butter knives and such, and they look pretty good. I can get a bucketful of old silverware at Goodwill for a couple bucks. I enjoy fishing with lures, but usually don't, because it gives me angina when I get $5 hung up underwater somewhere and have to break the line.

The fly tying is really really easy and cheap... just search it on youtube and you can find countless videos.

As far as making spoons, I've never made them myself, but here are some youtubes I watched awhile back when I was thinking about giving it a try.

Havent ever built any like that. We drive around after Christmas and pick up everybody's Christmas trees off the curb. We have built the pvc trees that have a main stem with smaller ones run through it. Friend of mine tore down his greenhouse and I got a lot of 1/2-1 1/2" pvc from that to build with.

I try not to use trees since you get hung up so much. Work great though

Yup, I use pvc and the sort since you don't get hung up on it. Get hung up on brush and loose too many jigs.
