Looks like a lot of work.

That river has so many regs and restrictions, only the lawyers can afford to fish it anymore.

RonE don't give a shit. He will rape and pillage every fish out of there with 55 gallon drums of arsenic. Seriously though, I would like to see that hatch.

It's one of them "purist" things like when RMFC insists he can outshoot Tom Knapp with his old Remington 870.

Those guys are friends of mine and I can tell you first hand that that's some of the funnest fishing anywhere. A bit oversubscribed during the salmonfly hatch, but this was shot on the Tribes' side of the river, where a tribal guide is required, so far less pressure and a perspective of the river most folks don't get. The hatch is on right now and I might make it out, but I don't get as excited about it as I used to and tend to fish later, when the fish still respond to the big bugs, but most of the other fishermen have moved on.

What do you mean by the Tribe's side? Can't you just walk across and fish right up to the opposite bank?

How much difference could the other side of the river make?

And it looks like that guy is fishing for ear lobes.

Amateur.

That side of this section of river is the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation land. The lower Deschutes is big, fast water, and pretty much impossible to safely wade cross anywhere. I don't imagine anyone has ever tried to do it more than once, even if they did survive the first try. It is also illegal to fish from a boat (unless you have a disabled person's permit to do so, but even then it's highly regulated,) so all angling is done while wading or from the bank. There is a small section of the Tribes' bank that is open to fishing with a permit, but most of it is off limits to non-tribe members, unless they are accompanied by a tribe member. No more than a handful of tribe members guide it--I know of two--so it sees a lot less pressure than the public side of the river.

May be the earlobe thing is a standing joke about fly fishers, I don't know, but neither of these guys is an "amateur," either in fact or in practice.

A look at the river and some of its collateral damage (speaking of amateurs.)

Elke and me last year. I don't usually fish with guides (not while they're working, anyway,) but I traded a day with him for a logo design.
