hmm, I'll have to check it out

At this point, I'd like to get an ice hut and a heater for sure, the auger I have is perfectly good-it's an Eskimo by the way. might get some extra blades for it too. My dad offered his auger up, but the blades are shot and I couldn't tell if I could get replacements. If I get the hut, I'll get an otter sled to haul the shit in. Right now my setup is geared towards being able to hike the stuff on my back, because there's no fuckin' way in hell I'm driving my truck out on ice.

You should invest in a Clam. Nit sure what a hut is but it sounds bulky.

Used to drive my 3/4 Chevy out on the ice all the time. Four Wheeler was more fun but when I would move my heavy ass shack around the bay I'd use my truck.

I have to agree with you, it is dangerous, why just the other day an ice cube in my scotch and water hit me in the lip when I took a big drink. Tears almost come to my eyes...fuck that!

You never should, but that doesn't mean that when done smartly that you can't drive on it

If I don't have tracks to follow out, I get excited. Virgin ice is the best.

You can drive an M1 Abrams on three feet of ice.

Fucking science and shit, man, this is supposed to be your deal MT.

When the ice is over a foot thick you can drive a semi on it.

seriously?

question: How can you tell how thick the ice is at any given point of a lake?

that's the part I'm uncomfortable with.

The thickness of the ice has a lot less to do with its strength then it's condition. I have driven my cj-5 on 4" of ice and gone through 14" with the same jeep

I love my ice all honeycombed up. Those air pockets mean it floats better:lol:

If it bothers you, wait for others to drive out first. If you are out fishing and you notice that every hole you drill is a foot or more, its time to drive.

Learn the lake to know where springs and currents are. If a lake has any of those, I'm not driving on it. If it's a regular lake, and the ice is good at shore, check it out a ways. That's the only way to know for sure I guess.

But like others are saying, clear ice, while freaky as all get out, is the strongest ice there is. If it's cloudy, it's weaker.

Ice actually takes longer to form near the shoreline as well, so if you don't break through getting on, your good to go.

I feel safer driving on ice than I do on land. No cops and nothing to hit.

As before this discussion goes any further, there's no hyphen. It's just ice fishing.
