In a place far far away in never never land, called California, there are people who mount various animals and accessorize with various costumes and jewelry

I never would have dreamed such but there was a student when I went to taxidermy school that was learning just that :o

You've already gone from good to really good. Much more and you'll have to quit your day job and eventually learn to hate the art form you're loving now...

It’s definitely a lesson in patience.

Nice work.

A banded dos gris is something I've never seen, but learned last spring that they band a mess of them somewhere by Mississippi River grain docks.

John, your mount positioning of birds is super creative, and realistic!!!! Only people that spend time in a blind, watching birds and their unusual acrobatics as they work the spread, can really appreciate some of these positions. Love the upside down bird with the head turned. Have never seen such a mount, but have watched birds do this as they are positioning themselves coming in, especially Mallards in a tight creek. Thanks for sharing

Rick, I shot two banded Dos Gris in one season, back in the late 70's. The first one I shot had pink paint sprayed on the underside of the wings. At first, i thought something was wrong with the bird, until I saw the band. A few weeks later, we had a big wad come in, and I saw one with orange painted on the underside of the wings, and shot it out of the group, knowing it likely had a band, and it did. Back then, (no internet) I wrote a letter when I mailed the information in, and got a response. Apparently, when they banded the birds, they painted as such, so that when they were targeting a group of birds to band, they could tell roughly, what percentage of the birds had already been banded. Have never seen one painted since.

I saw a double banded lesser scaup killed of all places Rick, the lyons farm in thornwell

Just before an opener a rain had flooded the plowed fields and for some reason the ducks took it,and one of the bag of that blind was a double banded scaup drake, one of which was a green reward band

Been seeing a lot of recovered scaup bands in SE La last few years. Most have historically passed on them when at all possible, myself included, but they’ve started thinking twice now that so many are handed.
