Downside is Eric is going to lose about 20 days of hunting this year to ice. Guess I’ll have to host him a time or two. ;)

20 days would be a harder winter than we’ve had in at least 10 years. Season before last set the record with 8 days of 3-4” inch.

Were you at that lease in 2013/14?

No that was my last year at mer rouge. We had beans that year and I remember having loads of ducks in November and some decent January shoots. Lotta gadwall and teal

Had I been in Jones in 13/14 I think we would have hammered them because my buddies in Jones did. It was cold all season that year.

I know that's one you've long talked about as being good for you, and I always found it bizarre as to how terrible it was for me.

Made me revisit that year on the log to see what the deal was. Below is log of weather for every hunt I made. Pretty mild first split and December

Sat. 1/25/14 30's/fog to clearing
Sun. 1/26/14 30's/pt cloudy

Do distinctly recall at least one ice event in S La, complete with interstate closures, think mid-Jan. Season included a record FOUR DNS hunts, and a whole lot of 2 or less duck hunts. Just bad all the way around. Notes say that "overall was a very poor season with the aerial surveys supporting as much". November and December surveys were both below average, January was up. Think they just never made it down to me on the coast. Interestingly enough, killed ten mallards that year, far more than usual. Recall some hunts we saw far more mallards than grays.

Also, did not kill a bird in teal season in 4 hunts.

We killed nearly every time out. Average nearly 5 birds per hunt per man. Hunted in a blowing snow storm and killed a 5 man limit. The entire lake iced over in January. I can recall sitting on my front porch talking to Eric and virtually predicting almost exactly how many we would kill the next day based on the weather forecast. That how consistent the shooting was that year. It's been steady down hill since them culminating with last years abysmal season.

The next year I did really well in Jones. Field was solid ice for early youth hunt in November.

Yep, was a cold (great!) one for my East Zone youth hunt that year, snow all the way down to north arkansas or something I think.
