Hunters: Buddy and I

Temp: 53 Degrees, wind NE 15 mph

The ducks did not move early, it was after 8:00 before we saw any ducks really moving. We did not put out a Mojo, and the Teal came anyway, but we saw very few Grey ducks. The wind was really making hitting ducks difficult. When the ducks came into the decoys after 1 shot they were gone with the wind.

Totals: Gadwall - 4, Greenwing Teal - 8

Hunters: Joey, Buddy and I

Temp: 47 degrees, wind NE 11, hazy misty then foggy morning

Once again very little duck movement early. The teal we had seen the prior 2 mornings were not there, not moving or something like that. It was one of those days don't let anything pass. We quit about 10:00 when the rain started.

Totals: Gadwall - 3, Green wing teal - 4, Scaup - 4, Spoonbill - 3

Hunters: Matthew, William (grandsons), and Me

Temp: 54 degrees, wind 5-8 mph N to NE, partly cloudy

This has become our most productive weather for duck hunting, not too cold, not too windy and mostly clear - but all good things must come to an end. It was our worst day of the hunting season so far - nothing moving. We only shot at 2 groups of ducks, 3 Pintail caught us looking the wrong way and we were only able to drop 1, and a flight of about 10 teal came in pretty, but only Matthew was able to get 1. I was very disappointed the boys did not have a good hunt since we have doing so well.
We planned on hunting again this morning, but the rain was already at the coast so we packed up and came home.

Totals: 1 - Pintail, 1 - Greenwing teal

Hunters: Larry and I with his dog Kaki

Temp: 42 degrees, W to WNW 15 mph it was a little chilly in the wind

We were hunting in our smallest pond but the wind was in our face, and the few ducks we did see came from our back. It looks like our ducks have left. We did not see many ducks moving and those that did only moved from one pot hole to another.

Total: 1 - Greenwing teal, 3 - Gadwall, 2 - Scaup

Hunters: Larry and I with his dog Kaki

Temp: 46 degrees, wind dead calm - warmed up real quick with no wind.

Saw a few more ducks this morning, but still nothing like we have been seeing. One of those days when we had ducks working another blind in the area shot and off they went.
Larry has been having a very poor hunting season where he hunts and I was hoping to put him on some ducks - NOT!

Totals: 3 - Greenwing teal, 1 - Gadwall, 4 - Scaup

Sunday, January 6, 2019

Hunters: Larry and I with his dog Kaki

Temp: 47 degrees, with 5 mph ESE wind

It was extremely foggy on our ride to the lease, drove up to our boats and it was totally clear. Drove out to the blinds and my blind was only a little haze, but the other blind that hunted had little to no visibility, it did not help us much we still had very few opportunities. Very little shooting in our marsh, but south of us near the coast we could hear a good bit of shooting. The water in our marsh has come up 1 1/2 feet in a week with all the rain.

Totals: 6 - Greenwing teal, 1 - Gadwall

Hunters: Joey and I with his dog Sugar

Temp: 61 degrees wind S to W at 8 - 10 mph

Of the 3 groups at the camp Joey and I are the only ones to hunt this morning. We left the camp a little late because of the rain, then waited at the boat landing for almost 1/2 hour for the rain to quit. We left the landing about 7:15, it took us a little extra time to get to the blind because Joey was a little bit in a hurry to get there, his boat went into "a power slide" (that means going sideways after a turn) and we ended up in a very shallow area and it took us a while to get out of. The entire time we were pushing the boat there was shooting all around us.
Once we were in the blind we had ducks coming from every direction. This was the worst shooting day I have had in a very long time - Joey was laughing at my inability to hit a duck.

Total: 5 - Greenwing teal, 4 - Gadwall, 2 - Canvasback, 1 - Pintail

Sunday, Jan 13, 2019

Hunters: Joey, Jeff and I

Temp: 41 degrees, wind 12 - 15 mph NNW - a little chilly with the wind

Going to the blind we could see ducks jumping up along the trails. Once in the blind the ducks would not move around. We could see teal and Gadwall all over the marsh get up move to the next pot hole and sit. After a front moves through the following day us usually not very good for us.
This was my last day hunting for the year - I pickup up all my junk I don't leave at the camp and brought it home - I am done for this hunting season.

Forgot what that was like.

Nice season, MB, glad you had a decent one (great by this year's standards) when so many struggled.

Those type of days are comical to reflect on, as far as your shooting, but oh so memorable in the fact that you had birds all over you!!!! Congrats MB, and glad your last weekend bore fruit

Glad you got to finish with a pretty good weekend. If memory serves, yours was a relatively strong season compared to most reports I've heard from that directionm so you must have done some things righter than Saturday's shooting.

4.6 average per hunter effort is just stellar, about anywhere. good work!

What a different attitude so many others (of us) would be taking into the offseason having had that kind of metrics for the season about to close.

y'all may not have noticed, but after December 30, 2018 I did not list my dog Abby as being along on my hunts.
Thanksgiving evening I picked up Buddy for our annual Thanksgiving trip to the camp, I had not gone more than 3 miles when I hit a deer. Abby rides on the second seat of my Yukon, and when I hit the deer and slammed on the drakes Abby flew off the seat hitting the front seat and got wedged on the floor. She was not hurt, but was scared to death - she was shaking all over.
I had damage to my vehicle, but I was still able to drive it, and we went on to the camp (it was a great 3 days of hunting) and Abby did well, but each week after that it became harder and harder to get her into the truck - she did not want to get in. It did not affect her retrieving, but avoided the truck more and more.
Finally on December 30 we were loading the truck to come home, and she would not come near the vehicle. I tried picking her up and putting in the truck, but you would not believe how strong an 80 pound dog can be - it did not work. Finally I put a leash on her and we walked around the camp a while, and got her to jump into the truck. After we were home she would not walk near the vehicle, so I decided to let her be and not force the issue, so she stayed home the remainder of the season.
I have been working with her and she now will jump in the rear of the Yukon, but still hesitant to jump on the back seat - she will but does not want to stay there.
I think she will be OK with a little more work and time passing, but a few prayers would be appreciated. She is too good of a hunting dog not to hunt again.

That's a whole lot happier ending than the beginning suggested. Glad to see she's alive and suffering nothing that time and Milk Bones won't fix.
