Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I hustled pretty hard at work due to the big rains this weekend. Had to find a new place for one of my loggers to work with a full week of rain in the forecast . All in a days work though, it was nice today. Temp barely got out of the mid 70’s with clouds and a northerly breeze. About ready for this soggy weather to leave and get into some cooler dry fall like weather. The rain will hopefully keep us away from a drought like last fall.

She shot about a box and a half. She was consistently shooting high and then Corey and I got her to adjust some things and she started crushing clays. Made me super proud. Image

10-6
Evening dove hunt at Reese ranch (my Moms sisters family)
4-6 pm
Cloudy with drizzle to partly cloudy
Corey 15 doves (he was on the X this evening)
Eric 3 doves
I let Tricia shoot at most of the easier shots and did some coaching, after we both felt good about me going to sit over by the next tree she promptly folded a bird. She had a good time, and I told her ducks and geese were much easier to hit.

That one has a live look, but the best dove advice I've ever heard was offered by a young Cajun kid when one of our dove hunters asked about a good spot, "Get by a naked tree."

Rode up to the lease this evening with one of my lease partners to mark the spot for the landowner to place our pit. It’s going to be approximately 30 yards due east of where it was last year, just facing north now on the new east to west levee.

Nephew and I’ve been deer hunting some during the youth season in area 2. Got to see 6 this morning and they were all up close and personal. Including this tiny spike and a nice young racked buck at 15 yards. ImageImage

Gather he passed.

We opened yesterday, but grandson Preston had a morning peewee football game, and I'd missed my only other chance that wasn't canceled due to wet fields and likely saw more action doing that, instead. Turned out I'd of missed all of the LSU offensive action, if I'd been afield when they started, too. Going this morning just to go, but still not certain where.

He did. He killed 2 last year so I’m not letting him shoot just anything. We saw some good sized spikes yesterday morning that I wouldn’t mind letting him shoot l, they just came out on wrong side for him.

They are lost! Send them southward with directions to Lake Amadee, coastal St. Bernard Parish where they belong

Preseason

Postby Ericdc » Wed Oct 24, 2018 7:40 pm

Update from the farm:

They got our pit put back in the ground today and pumps are running.

I’ll have to roll the stubble on north side of blind to open it up since it was too wet to disk, but we’ll have a big slick on the south side where the beans were.

Going to hunt deer opener Saturday morning then head north with a load of decoys and my wheeler.

Productive work day today

Kicking myself for not taking a before pic, but just imagine a pit that was put in the ground 3 days ago.

Here’s a pic I took when we first started putting the stubble around it
Image

We have a lot of natural grass growing along south side of levee where the blind now is so we pulled up a bunch of uncut stubble and cut some Johnson grass to match the green grass already there.

Getting better

Ridge rollin down some stubble on north side with a pallet behind his ranger.

Goose spread for next Saturday

We did see several flights of specks as the evening got later, but no ducks yet.

Our area is a lot more ducky looking than seasons past with all the standing stubble and slack water in the fields...much better than last years drought induced finely disked “moon surface” landscape.
