2018 Regular Season

2018 Regular Season

Postby DukMan » Sun Sep 30, 2018 12:04 am

Date: 9/29/2018 (Opening Day)

Time: 0620

Location: The Property

Cloud Cover: Bluebird Morning

Wind Direction and Velocity: Light and variable

Temperature: 47 degrees

Special Notes: Brother-in-laws first ever hunt

Waterfowl Activity: Saw hundreds of Canadas highflying and heading South. Saw approximately 50-60 wood ducks most in 5-8 birds groups. Saw 5 mallards. I believe the cold snap pushed all our teal out.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Birds wanted nothing to do with the spread.

Hunters: Myself, Jillian (wife), Steve (brother-in-law)

Guns: Browning A5 (mine), Browning Maxus (wife), Beretta A300 (mine-brother-in-law rental)

Malfunctions: None to speak of.

Dog(s): Rusty

Special Equipment: 2 spinners, one pulsator

Curses: The forecast had been for rain all week until Friday when the storm stayed south. Weather was all together too nice. Without rain the last week the water level is low on the property and the smartweed is on dry dirt. The birds we got were quick passing shots and the 2 new hunters never even got their guns shouldered...

Kudos: Rusty made a heck of a retrieve on a lightly hit Mallard which he about a 60 yard retrieve on through some thick cabbage.

Birds By Species: 1 drake wood duck, 1 drake mallard, one barn pigeon

Photo Ops:

Hate that your new hunters didn't have more opportunity, but they look happy and likely to keep trying.

Location: The Property

Cloud Cover: Overcast, light rain

Wind Direction and Velocity: 5mph from the North

Temperature: 53 degrees

Special Notes: Solo hunt

Waterfowl Activity: Far less movement than expected. Saw only 10-15 wood ducks, 6 mallards, and 2 flocks of geese.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Like yesterday birds wanted nothing to do with the spread.

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Browning A5

Malfunctions: I switched out my duck loads for goose loads when a pair of geese gave me a look and when I switched back to duck loads I didn’t get the bolt fully closed leading me to miss an opportunity at a nice drake mallard.

Dog(s): Mason

Special Equipment: 2 spinners

Curses: Birds not wanting to work and low water

Kudos:

2018 Regular Season

Postby DukMan » Sat Oct 06, 2018 12:49 am

Date: 10/4/18

Time: 0630

Location: The Property

Cloud Cover: Bluebird Morning

Wind Direction and Velocity: 15-20 mph gusts from the North

Temperature: 65 degrees

Special Notes: Solo hunt

Waterfowl Activity: Woodies moved in like something I’ve never seen... 20-25 groups of 20-30 birds, 2 flocks of 10-15 mallards, three blue wings still around and geese by the hundreds flying high heading South.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Wood ducks were skirting the spread at 100mph, 3 blue wings dove in, called a pair of geese down with 2 spinners going, and mallards stayed wary and flew over the spread high.

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Browning A5

Malfunctions: None to speak of today.

Dog(s): Rusty

Special Equipment:

Curses: Well I asked for water... it’s been raining nonstop and I got hit with a tidal wave from no water to 5-6 feet... winged one of the geese and he sailed to the middle of the property- Rusty couldn’t catch up to him (called him back) and by the time I got to the kayak the bird was gone somewhere in the reeds and I never found him. I wiffed on the blue wings that blasted into the decoys after catching my stock on my lanyard...

Kudos: Rusty’s first ever goose retrieve!

Nice.

That looks like a small goose from the picture. I thought I saw a flock of small (migratory) geese the other day. It seems pretty early for them. The geese are all over the place right now, but 2 more weeks before our season opens. Hopefully, the woodies don't move through early like they do some year.

I'm still holding a lot of wood ducks, however they are flying in large flocks and I'm assuming one cold snap from finding warmer weather. As for geese with the North wind the last 2 days we've had a huge influx in geese but most appear to be local giants. I think based on frame of this goose it was a hatchling from this year. According to our DNR our harvest of Ontario Canadian's has dropped so significantly that they no longer provide refuge for them and changed our zoning in the state to reflect a 85+% local goose harvest of the giant subspecies base on band data.

I haven't had good luck obtaining fields in SE WI as farmers are very hesitant to allow hunters in so my goose harvest has dropped from 100+ per year to 5-10. Last year my field decoys never left my trailer... But they are really expanding our hunting opportunities are I might get back out there and pound some pavement this year to get some fields since they changed our season structure and increased our daily limit.

Until then ducks it is... :duck:

Time: 0630

Location: The Property

Cloud Cover: Overcast/Light Rain

Wind Direction and Velocity: 4-5 mph from the North

Temperature: 58 degrees

Special Notes: Solo hunt

Waterfowl Activity: Saw only one small flock of mallards, still a lot of woodies around but nowhere near the numbers from 3 days ago, geese are in thick (locals) flying low

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Mallards wanted nothing to do with me... Wood ducks actually decoyed and had a single hen and group of 5 commit hard. Geese wanted down but spinners flared them.

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Browning A5

Malfunctions: None to speak of today.

Dog(s): Left then at home to rest... Rusty developed (dead tail) from working too hard.

Special Equipment: status quo

Curses: Work... it was a gorgeous rainy overcast duckie day but had to get to work by 1130 so only sat until 9.

Kudos: water came up another 12” or so putting a good amount of corn in the drink. In Wisconsin we shut down the southern season for 5 days so no shooting until next weekend and I hope by then they’re comfortably hitting the corn... we’ll see!

There goes Comeaux's season. All that sweat and toil to move his blind, and you're about to stop all his birds in Wisconsin. Hope you at least hold up a mess of them.

Your woodies didn't stop here. I spent a couple hours on the water yesterday and didn't see a duck :o

I do on my big mallard spinners but been too lazy to charge batteries. I’ve been using the smaller teal spinners with the AAs...

Cloud Cover: Bluebird

Wind Direction and Velocity: 8 mph from the West

Temperature: 47 degrees

Special Notes: Solo hunt

Waterfowl Activity: Seeing fewer and fewer woodies. Mallards are either singles or large high groups 20-30 birds. Shot a drake and hen mallard they came in separately.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Mallards stayed high not wanting to commit.

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Browning A5

Malfunctions: My pulsator motion decoys aren’t working properly I think the bilgepump might be burnt out

Dog(s): Rusty is back at it...

Special Equipment: status quo

Curses: Bluebird day... nice a cool but birds were hanging out high.

Kudos: Goes to my neighbor for letting me hunt his property in exchange for farming my little piece. He’s got 19 acres flooded that buts up to 110 acres of DNR marsh... 98% of the time I’m the only guy out there!

Cloud Cover: Overcast

Wind Direction and Velocity: 5mph from the East

Temperature: 45 degrees

Special Notes: Water is way down now on my property so working the neighbor’s until we get some precip.

Waterfowl Activity: Buzzed by GW’s early they whipped around and I dropped the hen... drake came zipping back 5 minutes later dropped him too. Single Gadwall drake dropped in and didn’t make it out.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Birds wanted in!

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Mossberg O/U 20g

Malfunctions: None to speak of today.

Dog(s): Rusty

Special Equipment: 2 spinners only 10 ducks and 5 geese

Curses: None to speak of.

Kudos: In Wisconsin we don’t shoot limits everyday... we grind and we appreciate what we get. I haven’t been skunked once yet this year and it may sound silly but this is the first Gadwall I’ve ever shot so I’m flying high right now... hope I didn’t jinx myself!

Date: 10/31/18

Time: 0655

Location: Public Marsh

Cloud Cover: Bluebird Day

Wind Direction and Velocity: None

Temperature: 48 degrees

Special Notes: Headed out to the public marsh to scout out a decent hide for some buddies coming down in a few days. Had the whole 110 acres to myself!

Waterfowl Activity: Woodies! I thought they had all left, saw 3 groups with a pair swinging in and a hen not getting out. Still seeing a decent number of mallards, big groups still circle and peal off. 3 bufflehead spotted walking out into the marsh.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Mallards will commit in singles and pairs big groups are seeing me. I was where the woodies wanted to be so they swung in.

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Berreta Outlander A300

Malfunctions: None to speak of today.

Dog(s): Rusty

Special Equipment: Argo - registered as a boat in WI so legal in the public marsh. Having brought out the Argo I threw out 3 dozen decoys and 3 mallard spinners and one teal spinner.

Curses: No wind... I need a jerk-rig birds are circling and having a hard time committing to stationary blocks.

Kudos: Rusty has been a machine lately but I fear the cold weather and him standing next to me in the water is taking a toll on his paws. I’ll be biting the bullet and buying an InvisiLab blind from MOmarsh to keep him dry and hidden.

Special Notes: Duckiest day of the year... I bit the bullet bought an InvisiLab and InvisiMan MoMarsh blinds... they are pricey but amazing quality and work great!

Waterfowl Activity: One Bufflehead and 10-12 mallards seen. We’ve got a terrible lull going on.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: The bufflehead was a kamikaze and the mallards just didn’t want to commit and with the wind were all over the place.

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Berreta Outlander A300

Malfunctions: Brought 2 decoy poles but forgot one mojo and the battery died on the mojo I brought 40 minutes into the hunt.

Dog(s): Mason

Special Items: New MoMarsh blinds!!!

Curses: No birds.

Kudos: Mason who is my house dog as his drive is questionable was a champ today in the marsh sitting in the Taj Mahal MoMarsh... he made a solid retrieve to hand on the buffie.

2018 Regular Season

Postby DukMan » Fri Nov 09, 2018 8:34 pm

Date: 11/9/18

Time: 0600

Location: The Bay of Green Bay

Cloud Cover: Cloudy/Snow Flurrirs

Wind Direction and Velocity: 5-6 mph from the NW

Temperature: 30 degrees

Special Notes: My first trip back home to Northern WI for a hunt. Cold front pushed a massive amount of birds in. First hunt on the bay of Green Bay and first accumulating snow fall of the season. First limit of the year!

Waterfowl Activity: 10’s of thousands of divers rafting on the bay. It was so good I started looking for different species passing on buffleheads that couldn’t help themselves

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Birds running the shore loved the spread. All birds were feet down in the decoys. I landed approximately 40-50 buffleheads twice in the spread and let them swim off waiting for other species.

Birds Harvested: Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Bull Canvasback, Drake Mallard (Triple Curl), Four Buffleheads (1 drake, 3 hens)

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Browning A5

Malfunctions: Bought a new Cabela’s Vest for Rusty and what a pile of sheet... it’s a zipper/Velcro combination...the zipper has no locking teeth on it ... it unzipped twice while he was working and fell off... I bought it yesterday and will be returning tomorrow.

Dog(s): Rusty

Special Items: Running longlines.

Curses: Missed an opportunity for a nice Redhead drake which snuck up on me while I was watching massive flights of birds a few miles out

Kudos: My buddies Uncles who let me use their cabin on the Bay as a launch point then invited me in for beer and brats for lunch.

What a hunt! Looks like a great time to be on the water!

I’ve noticed Cabelas quality has gone in the tank since bass pro bought them. I have a Cabelas credit card and am thinking of getting rid of it.

Been using Cabela's dog vests for what seems like ever, and when I read that comment, knew it had to be re-labeled Bass Pro crap.

But the hunt looked like fun for you, if not Rusty.

Postby DukMan » Sun Nov 11, 2018 8:13 pm

Date: 11/10/18

Time: 0610

Location: The Bay of Green Bay

Cloud Cover: Clear Sky

Wind Direction and Velocity: 4 mph from the West

Temperature: 26 degrees

Special Notes: My first ever Black Duck!

Waterfowl Activity: Thousands of divers rafting further out on the bay not nearly as many birds working the shoreline as yesterday.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Two flocks of Buffleheads dove in but most birds skirted the spread just out of range.

Birds Harvested: American Black Duck, hen Bufflehead

Hunters: Just me

Guns: Browning A5

Malfunctions: The MoMarsh blind must be a fair weather blind for the Missouri boys... iced up the legs wouldn’t extend for nothing and once I did get them out the locking mechanism failed to keep them extended under Rusty’s weight. I will be contacting MoMarsh for ideas/tips for cold weather use.

Dog(s): Rusty

Special Items: Running longlines.

Curses: I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn missing at least 5 opportunities at birds... plus I wounded one while out in the decoys changing a mojo battery and Rusty made it about 400 yards out into the bay before I could get him coming back as I had to run back to our hide for the collar controller.

Kudos: ...
