Likewise heard reports of what appeared as new birds over that way today. Debating on what I might do later this week

We'll see. I re-wrecked a nearly recovered knee just getting spinners out and back in that field opening weekend, so I'll not be chancing it again until that's behind me. But we'll hope it's at least the case for those who do hunt it, if not the whole region.

I know of of a field or two in Thronwell that are loaded, and those did very well over the weekend.

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: SE? light

Temperature: warm

Waterfowl Activity: Started off spooky slow but a few showed periodically until nearly curfew.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: First four groups and a couple subsequent ones seemed to know exactly what the mudhole is. But others came to die.

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): The bug's a blessing.

Special Equipment: SOS

I've not yet heard how the ag land guys did, but from what little shooting was heard from CR and Isaac's blind, we were apparently lucky to see what we did.

Lot of ag land limits in the region this morning on FB. Many begging for guns to come, offering reduced costs and ditching their standard 2 or 3-gun minimums.

I'd like to believe but remain suspicious. Were the photos yellowed with age?

Not like him to wait so long with such calls, but our guy who's been hunting the spot I took my opening afternoon crew just called to gloat about another 18, so I'm over my suspicions - and wishing I thought my knee ready for another flooded plowed ground "turn". (I kill me.)

All the teal must be in the ag land, because they left the marsh, in 3 hunts last weekend I only shot 5 times, and 2 of those were at cripples on the water.
But old stupid hard headed me, I am going again tonite. Maybe a few ag ducks will venture into the marsh.

Won't know if you don't go. We bettered our ag land this morning - but only because they did even more poorly than we.

Date: 9/27 Fri

Time: morning

Location: mudhole

Cloud Cover: partly but with most of it over the sun and saving us from cooking

Wind Direction and Velocity: nil to light SE

Temperature: OK to not oK when the sun broke out

Moon phase: small

Special Notes:

Waterfowl Activity: Saw more first hour teal than in some time, perhaps all season, then tapered off hard.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Nearly everything bought in.

Hunters: 2, Tom and Joe

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): Marsh barked at a close bunch making a second pass at a still a bad angle, but it was probably my reading him the riot act for it that ran them off. Four seasons in and that's a first for him. Better be a last, as well.

Special Equipment: SOS

Curses: The shooting was a whoooooooole lot better than the hitting.

Kudos: Still had a fine time.

Birds By Species: 12 bw teal (8 drakes and 4 hens)

Maybe that is why Marsh barked he thought the point was to make noise as they flew by.

No matter how well trained we think we have them, theyre still independent and can be unpredictable, just like humans. Legh has only barked at working ducks twice, and I likely ran them off getting on to her as well. However, after the guns go off, it was a different story a few years back. Tried everything I could. Finally used a squirt of lemon juice as she opened her mouth to bark. No more barking since.

There could be a lot more truth to that you think. And I may have hurt some feelings by finally suggesting that their big new high visibility front beads could be more bane than boon.

Oh yea! Got to have the high viz bead, how else could you line up birds down end of the barrel with one eye closed?

Just be glad you had birds and did plenty shooting. I'm putting away plenty 2018-bought teal shells right now for the 2020 season.

I HATE those sights

they pull your eyes to the barrel instead of the bird--giant distraction

all a bead is for shotgun wise is a peripheral vision point of reference anyway

Some years back, a fellow asked what happened to the bead on my old 20, and damned if I could even tell him when it went missing. (Same for my SBE.) And when a couple guys gave me a new 20 of the same make and model as the beat to crap one, I believe its relatively small Benelli bead messed me up for a while.
