We are in Oklahoma, yesterday we hunted the evening because of birds and weather it was still really slow.



We had extremely low expectations this morning because of dense fog forecasters, which we had but we also had a good wind. We managed a dozen mallards with a few crowd control issues.



Going back at 3 to finish day out on same pond. Going to be sunny and windy and although it doesn’t look like we are going to have a big hunt for this trip, if we can kill another 8 or 10 mallards this afternoon I’ll take it.

We’ve been plagued with horrible weather this year and last year on our trip up here. I know the hunting would be even worse back home with the warm weather and rain, but am excited about the forecast I’m seeing for this Saturday through Tuesday.

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: heavy to some clearing by time we left. Waited out heavier rain and get to put about 10 minutes late. Only other rain was when front passed.

Wind Direction and Velocity: SW 10-15 to W 10 to NW 10-15

Temperature: temp didn’t change much, low 60’s

Special Notes: knew birds would fly late and was right

Waterfowl Activity: kinda slow with local pintails doing there thing till front hit about 1 pm and a flurry of everything, including massive groups of teal.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: teal would work but never would get “right”. Single speck came as pretty as you could imagine. 2 pintails we shot worked very pretty. Mallards and gadwall still skittish.

Kudos: had 1 bird at noon and put together a decent strap.

curses: strap should have been 5-6 birds heavier if david and I could hit anything in rain and wind.

Waterfowl Activity: not near what I would have hoped. A few teal then loads of pintail with a few spoons gads mallards mixed in. Very poor goose flight

Waterfowl Responsiveness: teal ok, gadwall came pretty, pintail worked better the later it got, mallards grrrr, specks got blown out by other shooting

Time: dakota left at 10, we hunted all day from legal to legal

Location: pit bling

Special Notes: we wanted to see what the evening flight would be like

Waterfowl Activity: a flurry early with teal and pintails but couldn’t get any in right. Then it died with on and off flights from 9 to 1 then it completely died till about 4:30

Waterfowl Responsiveness: got another group of pintails in pretty good but 1 guy was out of pit, 1 guy couldn’t find a drake and other guy and I each connected

Malfunctions: david has a misfire in only teal opportunity

Kudos: beautiful cold clear day with good wind but we lost birds after front hit Saturday.

Special Notes: the wet westerly fronts have restocked us with teal all season it seems

Waterfowl Activity: great teal flight and not much else as far as ducks aside from some local gadwall pintail and spoons. More geese than we’ve seen in a week or so, but specks are getting tough. Flying around all quiet and stealthy

Waterfowl Responsiveness: teal continue to break from distance to my new whistle and was able to break several specks today only to lose all but the first group.

Malfunctions: think Michael only had 2 shells in his gun a couple times

Kudos: we shot real well early and had 8 teal pretty quick

curses: we did not shoot well after that with a couple different chances to fill our limit on teal. Also only hit 2 of 4 specks in kill them all range

Time: Colin, dakota, and I hunted all day. 2 other guys left at 11 with 6 ducks each and Michael came around 1:30 with our McDonald’s late lunch order to hunt until sunset

Temperature: 30’s to 50’s (jackets to t shirts

Special Notes: blind had flooded and was unhunted last 2 weeks. Dakota and I brushed and bailed it out Friday evening

Waterfowl Activity: decent flight of ducks and specks

Waterfowl Responsiveness: specks started working great once the guy who wanted to help me call them left at 11. Decoyed several groups after that

Hunters: dakota Colin Michael and 1, plus the 2 guys that left at 11

Dog(s): had a dog till 11 and another one when Michael showed up

Kudos: we shot decent overall but we were making sure each guy shot his own specks and a couple of the guys didn’t capitalize.

curses: decoyed a dozen specks while only 2 of us were in pit.

Time: unloaded at 9:30 and picked up the decoys

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: mostly to clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: light SW to decent WNW

Temperature: 40’s to 50’s

Special Notes: the boys did good on their one opportunity

Waterfowl Activity: decent amount of local gadwall and spoons. Decent goose flight

Waterfowl Responsiveness: teal came pretty, big ducks and geese were in avoid decoys mode

Hunters: nephews Colin 17 and Hunter 16

Kudos: pretty day

curses: not a curse but boys actually could have realistically killed 7-8 teal out of 1 group. Watching video, there were 3 shots I believe that did not connect...but 6 ain’t too shabby with 6 shots.
