Because I can. It's nice to have a big spread on the Missouri or on the south end of the lake I hunt. You won't get anywhere with 2 dozen decoys that are just like 20 other groups. I have ok variety, but it's easier to draw birds attentions to a unique and big spread instead of a single species spread of 20-24 from 20-25 other different hunting groups.

Unless you're hunting divers, I'd strongly suggest getting yourself a good call and learning to use it. That last part will separate you from the crowd, and you'll find the call a heck of a lot easier to pack in and out than more decoys.

I'm gonna go with you're wrong on this one. In that case, my "mobile" spread currently consists of about 20 dozen snow goose socks, 6 dozen full body geese, 1 dozen full body ducks and 6 dozen mallard floaters. Have only once left decoys out over night, not sure I'd do it again.

As far as mobile spreads go, it depends on the terrain, how far I'm going and how many people are coming with me. Usually figure on about a dozen decoys per person, but if the terrain is favorable enough that a jet sled can be pulled behind, I've been known to get about 4 dozen in if I think it necessary.

The most decoys I've ever carried in was 6 dozen this last season over 1 mile. Had the bag tied to me from behind and 2 dozen FB. I'd say it was worth it, even though it took 2 hours to wade through Lake Helena to get to the South end.

You need to save up a few hundred bucks and get a little john boat to throw in the back of your truck. Or even a kayak/canoe to get you from lace to place.

You really don't know what you're missing without a boat. Me and my dads used to be the tards that walked 1-2 miles with a shit tome of decoys. No longer. Not that we need a bunch of decoys anyways, just nice to have the option. We usually have about 6 dozen in our boat, but we don't always put out that many, sometimes we just use a pair of mallards on a jerk cord.

If you want to separate yourself from the puddle duck or goose hunting crowd, "less" is a whole lot easier and very often more effective than "more" if you can call and hide well.

If you're too lazy or dull to learn to call and hide, then you'll want a strong back and/or good transportation for all the extra decoys you'll need to toll birds and draw their attention away from the guy(s) with a gun.

X2 half a dozen quality decoys and being on the X is a whole lot easier.

I use 8 decoys most of the time. Works like a charm.

I like 18-24. My favorite hole has two escape routes. I use about a dozen on each to block them. Makes ducks hesitate and hover when landing plus I hate when they almost land, then flap twice and land behind me under the canopy. Putting decoys where I don't want them to land or just in the way to get there really helps me get easier shots at helicoptering ducks.

The problem is you don't always get on the X. Especially on public land.
