This subject don't come up much but sooner or later a hunter needs one.
I like my Buck knives. A good friend of ours who collects knives gave me several Buck knives. Good old made in USA ones.
I like my BuckLite the best.

There are a lot of companies that make good knives. Case comes to mind. Carried a Case for many years until George gave me them Bucks.

How I tell a good knife is how easy or hard it is to get it sharpened. Hard to tell on a new knife because they come sharp.
A good knife is a PITA to get sharp but once you get it sharp it will stay that way longer than a knife that is easy.

When I was a kid I hated Buck knives because I'd abuse the one my grandpa or uncle gave me and couldn't get it sharp again.
If I only had kept all them pocket-knives.
God bless my family for letting me learn on my own.

I was good at sharpening but was missing one little tool...the "strop".
The final step to getting a razor's edge on a knife is stropping it on a good piece of leather.
I can dry-shave with them Buck knives now. (if I shaved)

I prefer Case, but switched a year or so ago to a clip knife. Got tired of looking for my knife when it slid out of my pocket. If Case would make a knife with a pocket clip, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

The next knife I get is going to be one of those from tripod.

Those things are SHARP. I can put up a whole deer without having to sharpen once. I've had the same blade in there all season.

I just got a kershaw. So far I like it. Wanted a SOG or I think it was Blackwater(or blacksteal?) but didn't want to drop that much on a everyday carry knife. At least not now.

I like my case knife for everyday use.

I carry a gerber razor knife most of the time, slim and small. Last time I was up north I found a two blade buck knife on the peir, good score

Haven't taken anything down yet to use it on. Really like the feel of it especially the 60A, thicker blades. Although the 60's might be easier to skin with to flex with bones and hide.

For everyday it's been my case stockman for going on 5 years. Love it

Constant razor sharp knife is well worth the money. I've bought knives at the same price that I've tossed once they dull.

I like Case Trappers. From my experience sharpening knives, Case has the best steel to sharpen. The old ones can get super sharp if you work with them.

I own more knifes than a mexican rooster fight.

I don't care for many buck knifes.
I like my Kershaw, Schrade, Old Timer, and SOG knifes best.

I have a ww2 navy "skull buster" knife I use to clean deer with.

Schrade makes some great hunting knives. Thats what I use for deer and what not. Their steel is almost as good as Case's. Almost.

My SOG is one heck of a knife.

Never had or used a SOG. A knife is truely measured when you try to resharpen it.

Man, some of you guys must have heavy pockets. Flashlights, knives, keys...
I own a few knives, but I don't carry any of them because I know when I'll need them and it's not at the super market

All of mine are Buck and one Case, they have all been good.

i have one of the folding gerber gator knives, have cleaned a ton of deer, two bears and killed and cleaned who knows how many hogs with it. i keep it in the truck unless i'm hunting then it's in my pocket. around the house and boat i have dexter and victorinox knives laying every where.

My grandfather was really into his Case pocket-knives. He taught me about how on really old ones there are stars or asterisks on the base of the blade where it says Case on it.

How many stars or asterisks it had told you how hard the steel was or how high a carbon content it had.

Once you get a good knife sharp where it'll shave you...you start NOT letting people touch it. Have upset some of my good friends because I wouldn't just hand over my knife that I spent a half-hour honing to perfecting so they could cut a duck breast out on a concrete slab.

I really like this one. Found it in my bag. Tried to figure out who lost it and nobody claimed it so it's mine. Holds an edge. The hole is so it can be opened and closed with only one hand. I can open it with mittens on. Don't even know what brand it is. Has a spider on it. Have cleaned a lot of ducks with it since I found it. Kind of needed a knife at the time. Odd how it appeared when I needed one.

My old boss gave me this ugly old haggard peice of crap and I just can't seem to lose it . I bought a nice kershaw last year with a spring loaded blade and lost in within a month

Keep that knife. I know you plan on it.

Researched my "found" knife and it's not cheap. It's a SpyderCo which is high-dollar. This one is a low-end high-dollar knife.

No. The x and dots tell you when it was made. Co to wrcase knives, and click "case college", then "tang stamps". Every 10 years, there's a new dating system. You can look at any Case knife and tell when it was made this way.

Round about, yes. Probably 3 or closer to 4 it seems like big could be lying. Back of other blade states CV, carbon, and the alloy is marked below it

I will not carry a knife that will not shave. I sharpen mine at least every two weeks to keep them sharp. Once you get the process down and get a good set of stones you are set. Also I have found that a leather strap is absolutely necessary to have a sharp knife.
