got my 15 horse 2001 2 stroke merc outboard out of the basement and put it on the boat today and noticed a bit of oil around the prop. Not much and there was no oil spot on the basement floor. What does that mean? Is there a seal in there that is deteriorating or what?

I had the same thing on the 40 I bought and i asked a motor mechanic and he said that if they sit for a while that oil from the exhaust will settle around the prop on 2 strokes. I thought he was crazy but I ran it once and didn't have any more oil show up all fall.

It's 2 cycle oil that you mix with the gas, only a small amount if the oil is burned, the rest exits with the exhaust, when an outboard sits the oil runs down and out the vents on the mid section and through the hub of the prop, usually very blackish oil, not a worry. If the oil is very thick and viscous and smells of hear lube take it in and have them pressure check the lower unit

If it is thick like gear lube as mentioned, pop the prop off and look for a piece of fishing line/debris wrapped around the output shaft and tangled up in the seal. Seen this more than once.
