Exactly. I don't know how many times I've sworn my hands were dry after picking up a duck, then sitting down to a fresh cup of coffee and a smoke, only to find after trying to light the lighter (which at this point is out of commission for about 15 minutes) that they weren't as dry as I thought. So I take two.

You beat me to it Jim. I was gonna post the lighters have nothing to do with a fire for you. They're more about your habit and how you would have to get back to the jeep lighter if you couldn't light up.

One of the best hunting stories I've got is from the time I watched my buddy (who forgot his lighter) light a smoke, and lose an eyebrow, with the powder from a shotgun shell some wire and the boat battery.

My last year of smoking I light cigarettes off the exhaust of the old long tail I had.

Sent from my phone.

It was funny because for the first 2 hours he was jones-ing around looking for a way. I offered a dip of cope several time but he wouldn't take my offer. Then he finally had his epiphany. He cut a new shell lengthwise, got rid of the pellets and saved the powder. Then did the same cut on an empty shell and put them together, like a canoe. Hooked wires to the battery then jumped face first into the flare up. Smoked 3 back to back while he could monkey start em, and still ended up getting a head rush.

I would need 3 gallons of PB Blaster, a propane torch, an 18" set of Channel locks, and a 3 foot piece of pipe if I ever wanted to change my choke. And that's just too much to carry.

I got the original one that Ol' Man Briley forged in his blacksmith shop, framed in a shadow box with an original photo of Nash Buckingham, John Olin and Briley and a limit of ducks and a hand written note from Teddy Roosevelt to Briley personally approving the original patent.

Olly wrote:I'm eating restless for duck season and was going through my blind bag and was thinking about all the crap in there and what other people feel they must have in their blind bags.

I usually have

Flashlight
Shells
Calls
Small first aid kit
Some kind of snack
Small roll of TP
Knife
Maps or charts and Compass

These are things I always have in the bag and never come out expect when in use.

What are your basic must haves?

Sent from my phone.

I don't carry a compass, but I don't hunt big lakes...I can throw a rock across the river I hunt in most areas. It's a good idea though, and will be added this season.

In addition to Olly's list (In my brand new ginormous blind bag) will be,
Headlamps
Lighters
Extra Batteries
Whistle
Paracord
Wader Repair Kit
Neck Gaiter
Hats (Ballcap & Colde Weather)
Gloves
Baby wipes - Great compliment to TP when in the woods...

I pack like a woman, but I would rather be prepared than need something I left at home.

Negative! Duck hammer is running on the it must be fancy and cost a lot to work platform.

I'm running on the you could use almost any whistle to call in teal and sprig platform.

Pay attention!
