Roll top pit lid

Postby Steele22 » Tue Nov 03, 2015 9:51 pm

Thinking of making one of my pits a roll top lid, I hate those fold up flaps. They are hard too brush and stick out in a flooded field because their height. Gonna make mine 2-10 footers thinking it'll roll better than 1-20 ft. Anyone hunted out of a roll top? Like or dislike

Not a fan of those with a solid top, as it's too tough to see what birds are doing. (Or as one of our hunters said about Arkansas roll-tops, "Your eyes adjust to the light just in time to see what the guide shot.") But a buddy of mine solved that hitch with a top made of cattle panel that's well grassed. Everyone in the pit can see out through the grass, but the birds apparently can't make out what's below the grass. Think it's only about 3/4 closed in this shot:

Yea I was planning on brushing it real thick and leaving it cracked a little to see. The flaps that are on it now are not see thru after we brush. Have to leave a little gap. The roll top will be 1 ft above the pit so I figured we can look out from under it too

None of my business Steele, but have you thought of the covers Mack's pw sells? There pretty inexpensive when compared to others..idk I'm no pit hunter..

I haven't. What are they

I understand that. I did until these duck dynasty stars came out. Can't get a public spot unless you get out about 2-3 in the morning. It's nice to sleep in, eat and roll out to hole about 30 min before time and load up. Getting lazy as I get older I guess lol. Fuck your comments duck hammer

@Rick that's a good looking top. How does it open/close? Both my pits are in the field. Farmer leave a "false levee" strip of rice down the field where the pits are, it's hard to hide them as the geese trample down the strip. That's why I wanted a roll-flat top that's low profile. The flaps are ok until the strip is gone. I'll post pics from last year

It has big rollers on angle iron tracks set as Vs and at a slight slope. Uses a simple bungee to start it back when the latch is tripped, but rolls slowly enough that birds don't crap like they do when something jumps.

You should rig up some kind of weights on pullies to make the doors open much easier.

But it looks awesome so far, I want to see a video of it in action when you're done.

In the top left of the window there is an upload button.
