Here it works better if you hide in front of the brush pile.
Saw a deer hunting video where it worked on deer.
Tried it on shoreline ducks and it works.

Quite a few of the Illinois public venues allow this sort of thing shown above.
That looks a lot like where I started out as a kid.
If I knew what I know now I'd have hauled in t-stakes and a driver and a roll of chicken wire, zip ties, loppers and a saw. It's allowed in some areas. Not in others.
Example: rend lake subimpoundments. No! They'll ticket you for even having loppers.
