Teal Opener

Pleasantly surprised at number of birds in the marsh this am. It wasn't till yesterday afternoon did I see more than 5 teal. Yesterdays small group of 15 was just a taste of the flights to come this am. Should have been done by 7 am but I picked up around 8 and was still 4 short. Got back in the blind and finished up on the next bunch in.

Made a hunt this am with a good friend that had a previously made commitment. Had to be back on the road for 8 am. Didn't see nearly as much flight as last weekend but our shooting made up for it. 14 birds came in to the decoys this am, 12 stayed. Will see if the weekend crowd will help move em in the am.

Was afraid all that rain would screw your end up, but we had a hunter from Johnson Bayou in camp yesterday who would have been better off with you.

Had high hopes for this am but was met with tougher conditions than use to. Couldn't get the big groups to work although had nice consistent flights. Had a few pairs and singles that finished but can't remember shooting into a group bigger than 3. Finished with 10 for 3 people.

What a day makes. Saw less birds than yesterday but most worked pretty. Was done with 18 by 8:30.

I keep the brush fairly low for quick opportunity at teal. Will cover up tighter for big duck.

Indeed, pit blind or platform?

Four fiberglass individual pits with a dog platform on one side. Have a small walkway to the East of the pits that each hunter uses to walk down and enter individual pit. I'll snap some pics next time out. I have hunted many different blind set ups and its what works best for us. Thanks for the comments and interest.

Very cool, thanks for taking us along.

I'm having a pitiful teal season on the east end of the state but not quite done yet.

I am glad you have teal - we have none. I guess the storm moved them to other locations.

Was happy to get to 4 birds this am after way less flight than either of the last two weekends. Was thinking a single digit hunt was in the mix. Then a group worked in perfect and 8 fell to the guns on our volley. That got us smiling and fist bumping. Grinded it out to kill the 18th right at 9:40.

That'll work! If no hurry, nothing wrong with hanging out in the blind a little longer.

Folks thinking teal are done by 8 are usually missing out on some of the tamest birds of the morning - if they can take the heat...

Sunday flight was weakest of season for me. I guess teal are like me and dont like moving when it's so hot and muggy. Finished with 15.

A pic of walkway to access pit, and flap down ready to hunt. Please excuse the myrtle. It had turned a brown and since I only hunted weekends I hadnt freshened it up.

Very nice set up! I've harvested tons of myrtle over the years. Constantly refreshing it during the season.

That looks great, love some SW La engineering, or really the entirety of the hunting community and the contraptions they come up with.

Yea. Normally keep fresh cut myrtle stabbed in the water behind blind. Freshen up with green pieces on flap as needed to keep right hue to blend. Try to work in a few roseau and coffee bean/indigo to break things up. Try to stay away from look of a total myrtle island. Works for me.

Pirogue to blind or boat hide nearby?

Pretty slick way to conceal both the walk and some of the big hole most fiberglass blinds present.

Thanks for all the nice comments. We used to not use walkways. Just a 3' x 3' dog platform on one end and the far hunter would step off on the platform, enter 1st pit then climb into 2nd pit then finally 3rd (far) pit. Repeat until all hunters in their own pits. It took a crafty late 70 ish hunter to come up with the walkway idea. It definitely makes it easier to load up and to squeeze down the look from above. I'll be sure to take a couple pics of big season brushing to get a better idea of how hidden you can get. Just to give an example, there is another 3 foot of walkway and another fiberglass pit past the 3 shown in the previous pic. I normally keep it brushed up since we dont hunt more than 3 guns often.

Drop off hunters using surface drive, stash SD about 500 yds away then pushpole pirogue back to blind. I'll snap a couple pics of pirogue slip this weekend.
