2021 Turkey Season

2021 Turkey Season

Postby Duck Engr » Tue Mar 23, 2021 3:58 pm

3/23/21- First hunt of the season, which started Saturday. Once upon a time I never would’ve missed opening weekend of turkey season. 2 kids will change that.

Morning before work. If they were all this easy I’d quit hunting turkeys.

Dad and I got to our listening spot around 6 am. Hadn’t been there 5 minutes and heard our first gobble 400 yards away. Moved 200 yards and got set up. Ended up being 4 gobblers roosted together. Assume it was last year’s crop of jakes we dubbed the “goon squad”, as they were running most other gobblers off. One of them, the last to gobble, ended up being roosted about 100 yards from us. Listened to he and another gobble back and forth until 635 or so before the closest pitched down. A few soft clucks and yelps from Dad positioned behind me and 3 of the gobblers came walking down the road. The lead bird stopped at about 25 yards looking for his hen. I wanted to shoot the strutting turkey in the back but he and the third bird were so close together I knew I would’ve killed two in one shot. Took my shot on the front bird and connected. Two year old. Still a lot of fun.

I’m very fortunate to work for a company full of turkey hunting fanatics where it’s unusual for everyone to be in the office before 9 or 10 from the middle of March to the end of April. As long as the work is getting done like it should, no one bats an eye.

That it is. I’ve been chasing them since I was 6 years old. Still have the itch to go chase them year after year.

Thanks! I say the same thing about golf and fishing. I definitely have to reduce my duck hunt numbers so I don’t burn all of my marriage capital in the winter. The 6 weeks between January 31 and March 15 is spent doing everything I’ve neglected in duck season so I can get back after the turkeys.

I don't have this issue now after my hunting situation last year..... Not gonna happen again this year. The withdrawals were unbearable,
