This popped up on my FB news feed tonight and I stared at it for some time. It actually stirred up the feelings I would have at that age about duck hunting. It was a wonderful time in my life and I so wish I could have those strong feelings back again.

Pretty poignant, that. Though I must say duck hunting's held up to time better than most other things, and it made me think of some of the oldsters I've been lucky enough to hunt with who still held it in awe.

Made it through the storm in good shape with only tree damage. We have been without power and on generator since Friday evening when the winds got really strong and unsure at the moment of when we'll get power. We stayed home and got to experience a small taste of mother natures power. I don't doubt we had gusts in access of 100 mph.
My generator of 10 years voltage started fluctuating so I had to run out and purchase a new one. I didn't want to burn up any appliances. I have run that generator at least 3 or 4 times a year every year and kept up good maintenance on the engine, which still runs great. I'll will attempt to repair this unit. It seems simple enough and may only be a faulty regulator.

Yesterday evening just before dark I had checked oil and refueled and the wife and I had settled in watching TV and I was on my laptop. (Internet service had been down for a while during and after the storm) As we were sitting there we went black and I heard the gen shut down. I grabbed the flash light that was next to me and headed out the door to check on it within seconds of shutdown.
I was thinking a catastrophic failure on something that had been functioning so well especially without a telltale sign was puzzling. As I made it half way across our back deck my light came across the generator 30 yards from where it was supposed to be, across a swale ditch and in front of my camper. My light then found a car speeding out of that driveway without lights.
They had attempted to steal a running 6500 generator fully fueled using a car. It boggles my mind on how they thought they'd ever get that loaded or have enough time to do it with us in the house. Going forward I will be toting my .223 with a loooonig loaded clip on unscheduled generator shutdown checks at night. You may be reading about me on the national news.
It seems there has been a rash of these types of robberies in our area since the hurricane. One of the sheriff deputies responding had the same thing happen to him over the weekend. (That was really comforting). No consequences for your actions is beginning to be a big issue in this country. We need to revert back to the wild wild west. Hangings in the town square. I'm still highly PISSED OFF!

Wow Dave! Sad you have to be packing just to go check your generator but so it goes nowdays. As you said, there are no longer repercussions for poor choices in our country.

agree 100% DC, no repercussions of actions. Glad to hear you just have power supply issue to contend with and nothing structural to home.

Law and order need to return to this country or the shit will get real. Many have become embolden watching the lawlessness shown day after day on the nightly news, and drug influence only enhances this. I've had about enough of this crap.......... Send skoal long cut wintergreen and hunting magazines if I should end up in prison, please.

I was in that country today. Had a wedding in Kaplan this evening. Ate at the Regatta, neat place. Did see 100-200 birds in a field on south side of highway just east of Gueydan.
Saw a group of specks flying just after we saw the ducks. Gets me excited

Real-time analysis maps show intensities of actual nocturnal bird migration as detected by the US weather surveillance radar network between local sunset to sunrise. All graphics are relative to the Eastern time zone. The yellow line moving east to west represents the timing of local sunset. Areas with lighter colors experienced more intense bird migration. Orange arrows show directions to which birds flew. Green dots represent radar locations for which data are available; red dots represent radar locations with no data available. Note that many radars in mountainous areas (e.g. the Rockies) have obstructions that restrict radar coverage, providing the appearance of no migration where migration may be occurring.

That’s neat DC. I wish I could compare to 20 years ago to see if they’re migrating at night like I suspect

Curious how would you roll/buffalo these fields for duck and goose hunt prep. I have 6-25 acre blocks front and back of three pits on the middle divider levee. The middle two blocks are not hunted. The two outside pits are hunted. They are 660 yards apart.

I'd want something like 50yd wide strips, front and back, along the length of the levee the blinds are on.

Ideally I would want everything the same but that’s too much land for that. So I too agree with the strip theory. Key here is entire length of levee. No circles. No rectangles only some of way ,etc. not teal set up. These birds are ultra educated

If flooded atv ruts not an issue in the strips that are worked. Don’t drive the levee. In non flooded or mud situations, one set of ruts, no turn around near blind. Same set used to come in ,park on other side and drive same ruts on way out

Use one side of blind to get in and out of. Avoid walking and or smashing cover around blind. Make sure covered over top. So much so that it makes you wonder if you can even see the birds. It takes that level of concealment to kill geese consistently.

Best possible full bodies that can be afforded.

No typical landing lane—- goose wise—- small family groups with minimum of at least one sentry per say 3 feeders. Never all feeder group. Real geese always have a look out bird for danger.

If put ducks with the speck decoys, I suggest pintails. Once again pairs and such randomly placed. Not the typical big wads with landing lanes

If going to put snows, anything less then 200 is useless. I would not fool with.

I don't think I've ever really felt depression until this morning. Yesterday evening my nephew Blake sent me a text saying there were snows and blues passing overhead and that he had seen a few wads of ducks go by right at dark. This morning I had a phone shoved in my face with a video of what this front had brought with it.

SIGH....... It's going to be a hard winter for me.
