The one think you MUST have

I know there had been post about gear you will not leave the house with. But what is the one thing in or on your boat you will not leave the ramp without. Or what is the best improvement you have done to your boat that has helped.

Number one think and item I don't leave the house without when in a boat is a paddle.

1. weather forecast
2. life jackets
3. fuel
4. 2 fully charged batteries
5. plug
6. boat paddle
7. rope, anchors
8. fire makers
9. bilge pump
10. shit hook/push pole
These are basic, but never leave home without them. Most hunts are ruined or made dangerous by lack of these items.

The boat itself: Make sure it is big enough for the water/ conditions/number of people/load you are carrying. Too many people perish every year because they thing their 12 foot boat can do the work of a 20 footer.

I've left the ramp with nothing in muddy's list before.

Your wits.

In addition to Muddy's list, we keep a PLB on board too

If you forget the plug it is imperative to keep your speed up the entire venture

In which case the extra fuel comes in handy.

Or a buddy that can paddle like a hopped up jigaboo.

I've found that no matter how many times you tear a carb down, clean, and rebuild it, the damn motor just won't run without gas.

And when you move on from that, no matter how many times you clean, gap, and replace the spark plug, it STILL won't run without gas.

And when you move on from THAT, no matter how many times you shock the piss out of yourself holding a screwdriver to test the ignition, the motherfucker still won't run without gas.

I almost stroked out pulling ti back to the ramp. Since it was Thanksgiving morning, and I was on the way to being VERY late, I was dragging it in a straight line to the ramp, through mud, marsh grass, dry land, and water as well. I was a hurting unit by the time I got back to the Jeep. It was probably the extra weight of the full one gallon gas can in the boat that almost did me in.

My brother last year called me to come pick him up bc the boat was dead in the water got out and the damn gas line was not hooked up to the tank. I will always give him crap about that. I also never leave the ramp with out two Q beams

I'd say one of the best improvements I've done to my boat, that I don't see very often on other boats, is the pods. Makes a great swim step for the dog, and even more useful for when I'm getting my ass in if the water is knee deep.

That's like remembering to breathe, it just happens naturally.

My mantra before leaving the driveway:
Guns, shells, waders, coat
Dog, decoys, gas in the boat.

Said in a repeating rhythm like a crazy person.

Find myself repeating the same for necessities. As long as I have that list I can hunt. Everything else is a bonus if it makes it to the boat

I got half way to the blind one morning this year and realized I forgot my gun. Not a good way to start the day.

I did that once a few seasons ago. Now I keep one of my spares under the back seat all season long.

Luckily, on those days when I forgot my gun, I never made it further than the corner store for coffee before remembering. Although honestly, a lot of days it wouldn't have mattered even if I did remember my gun. I often think I'm not so much a duck hunter as a decoy-putter-outer.
