Help please with v-twin

Postby FlintRiverFowler » Wed Dec 04, 2013 6:52 pm

16 hp go devil will not turn the starter from the key. Had the starter checked its good, new solenoid, new ignition switch.
The boat will occasionally turn over if you arc the solenoid post to the starter with a wire.
What the fuck is this part?

Rectifier.

Of it starts key on with the pull, but doesn't start with the electric start my guess is its grounding out in the "start" position on the key switch

Ok Olly thinks it might be a bad ground too.
I didn't wire it, it has a harness plug.

The ground that comes from the ignition switch looks like a rusty corroded peice of crap. I'm gona try to hook that to a better spot tomorrow. I'm done with this boat for today though.

Don't give up! Go hook that wire up to a decent ground and try it. You'll sleep 1000 times better if you fix it tonight.

Does that motor have a mercury start switch? My long tail had a mercury switch, in order to start it had to have the prop tipped up out of the water.

I already had him bypass the Mercury switch. I think it's a bad ground.

Same one that was on my Kohler.

Well I just went out and connected the ground I though was bad to the negative battery terminal and the engine block itself, neither gave me any juice when I hit the switch

I don't think you have a bad ground, rather something is grounding out your spark when you are in the start position stealing power from the coil. Key switch would be my first guess, bad selonoid my second, a wire worn through somewhere would be my third.

I think what John's trying to say is, there's something wrong with your motor.

I'm on the hunt again. Undid figure one thing out, there was so power to the key switch, I know it has power now bc the stern light is wired to turn on with the key switch. I moved the wire that supplies power to the other terminal on the solenoid where the battery power comes in and now the light comes on when the switch is on.
NOW- the solenoid I took off was part number : 852-1211-210, the solenoid I replaced it with is part number 852-1251-210. Does this matter? The only seeming difference is the bracket. Other wise it looks the same. Has three posts anyways.

^this kinda shit is how I got the name Johnny boomerang lol

I think you may have the wiring wrong on the key switch itself. Do you have a voltmeter or test light?

no I'm not that high tech. The switch plugs in to a harness though. The old switch worked last year and it hasn't been tampered with til now, both the old switch and new switch are giving me the same result light on and then nothin in the start position. From the wiring diagram it looks like I got it right though. I can arc the power from the power side of the solenoid to the starter and it rolls over. It occasionally turns over when I arc the power side to the small post. Ill see if I can find a test light when I run to my shop to get the old solenoid.
