Both have their merits and I have owned both, first I had a 27hp long tail and now I have a 35hp SD.

Long tail Pros & Cons

Pro: Can reach out and get you unstuck better because of their length
Pro: Cheaper on the used market
Con: Harder to drive/turn
Con: SLOW

Surface Drive Pros & Cons

Pro: Faster
Pro: Easier to drive, can drive these sitting down
Con: More expensive
Con: Heavier than most LT of the same HP.

Hope that helps!

Olly has pretty well nailed the pros and cons.

In addition: Surface drive boats will usually haul a larger load.

Mine is for sale

What is the water like for 90% of your boat useage? Deep? Rocky streams? Shallow hard bottom? Shallow muddy bottom?

It doesn't really matter, anywhere he goes he will look cool if he has a surface drive!

He got the fever. There is no stopping it now. Airboat fever hit the bay a couple years ago when the water levels really dropped. My first season I never heard or saw an airboat. Now you can hear them running just about every morning.

At this point I can't afford a welded boat with any type of mud motor... much less an airboat, saw a couple old guys running some really badass air boats up on the river this past summer. First and only ones I've seen around these parts.

If I could afford one I'd have one. Save a lot of idling with the motor at full trim and pulling the boat by hand.
Would be the shit for bowfishing too.

After all the stumps we hit this weekend with Ollys boat with no real problems, I'm damn sure gonna have one before too long, that would've destroyed my riveted boat and knocked the lower unit off my motor to boot.

No stumps here to worry about, but we have big ass boulders. Had a close call this past spring when I hit a gravel bar at 35mph. Luckily I missed al the boulders and only shredded a prop.
