Sold my 15 hp long shaft mercury yesterday and am supposed to be picking up a 76 Johnson short shaft 2 stroke 25 horsepower this weekend.
The guy who has it said he just had it gone through by a guy who only works on Johnson and evinrude. It's got electric start and everything works. It has 140 psi compression on all cylinders.
Should I expect a noticeable speed increase going from a newer 15 long shaft to this older 25 short shaft? (My boat is short transom so hoping Being rigged properly will help out a lot) I guess what I'm asking is does a 25 hp of yesteryear have comparable speed/power of the newer motors?

Only bitch about that motor is it uses shear pins and is pretty loud. Will run great though

A super light lowe 1640 mod V.

My 1648 with a 40hp does 32. That was with my 100lb bowfishing deck up front and 3 12v batteries and 2 guys.

Really depends on prop size/pitch. I have several props for my Larson fiberglass pleasure boat, I have a prop that we use for tubing/skiing that gets the boat up and out of the hole quick, but top end is slow, then I have another prop for pleasure cruising that is slower out if the hole, but hits 5mph faster on the top end.

Another question, when you tried to hot and fast your ribs did you have a water pan in the smoker?

I hope you're right bc with the 15 I had me my brother (200lbs each) and my dog (60lbs) in it runnin only 22. That motor was kind of a turd.

That motor was kind of a turd.[/quote]im only guessing but I'd wager I'm close, if you were getting 22 loaded with the 15 you may get closer to 30 with the 25. I am pretty sure that year 25 was rated at the crankshaft not at the prop, burbot was still a torquey motor, that along with the big blades that sold hub prop has make it a bit of a beast

Those motors are dated looking but pretty haus. I hate the old school lower unit without the thru hub exhaust, but they get the job done. That boat of yours is light as hell to isn't it, like you can lift it off the trailer yourself light?

That's fast for a 15. My dad's 1442 mv has a 15hp on the back and with me and gas does 22...2 guys no gear 18...3 guys no gear or 2 and gear it will just plane out but won't go over 15. 4 guys and you're plowing at 8ish.

Yeah, pretty much. When I'm hunting I can drag the whole boat up on shore almost.
I'm kinda stoked about the engine being noisy and smelly. Being obnoxious can be fun sometimes, and I'm a connoisseur of annoying shit.

I didn't see this last night mr de-railer. But no. They say the uds doesn't need a water pan.

I have been experimenting with water pans in my akorn, they say you don't need them with that but I like to mess, last shoulder I did finished about 3 hours faster than I expected, might give it a shot

damn, i have been cooking them 3.5 hours at 275 ish (no wrapping them in foil) and they are bomb, try a water tray under them, i think you'll aprove

I might try this Sunday... Unless im out blasting around the lake with my 76 Johnson.

Picked it up today, changed the plugs, and ran some good gas with seafoam through it. It's running rich as fuck. When I adjust the rich/lean knob it doesn't help much and if I go too far in with it it starts back firing. Gona take it out to the lake in the morning and see if it does better with clean water instead of the barrel.
