Trolling motor ???

I have a 56lb 12/24v motor guide. I have it hooked up fright to 12 volt and it's slow as shit. My dad's 45lb minnkota pushes it a lot faster.
So my question is...will switching it over to 24 volt give me more thrust??

I don't know why that would make it faster. Do you hit bottom a lot with it?

Some but not a lot.

no

So what's the point of it being 12/24 volt then?

24 volts uses less amps thus longer battery life.

Im not an electrical genious, but it has to do with the amperage draw is more when running off 12V and would drain a battery faster than a lower draw at 24V. Sort of the same reasoning why a 220V water heater is more efficient than a 110V heater.

Yeah. It uses half the amps. But it takes 2 batteries to get you to 24 v so it doesn't make a difference.

So the motor is probably shot then?

two batteries but less draw in the long run.
Your prop could be a big part of it too.

It really makes no difference. It's a pretty big debate in bowfishing forums with 12 vs 24 volt run time. Couple guys did tests and found that there is no difference if wired properly. Just need bigger wire for 12v.

My prop is brand new because I thought that was the problem.

I had a buddy who lost a few speeds on his trolling motor because he was constantly going through vegetation and hitting bottom. Maybe you striped a gear.

I'm gonna crack into it sometime and see if anything looks fucked up on the inside.

The battery could be shit. How long does it usually last?

Maybe this means it's time for a pusher fan on my boat.

New batteries too. Lasts about 3-4 hours per battery.

Do electric trolling motors have gears?

Have you taken it apart and cleaned it?

He didn't take it apart, just washed and waxed the outside 5 times.

Probably has some sort of planetary gear, I'd imagine.

Is it a tiller or foot controlled?

3 to 4 hours run time doesn't seem to long to me unless your running it wide open with a heavy load.

Yea check the gear oil. Might be low.

I though it was just an electric motor with an output shaft directly to the prop.

Cable foot control.
It's wide open all the time. On and off a lot. And usually a heavy load.
