Tohatsu 40 hp problems

Postby broccoli » Tue Aug 28, 2012 9:41 pm

Are there any mechanics on here? I have a tohatsu and took it to the shop to get the carb rebuilt because it would start and idle fine but when it was put in gear it would bog down at run at a max of 1/4 throttle with the throttle wide open. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like a float to me, but I don't know much about outboards, and even less about bigger outboards. I have a 3.5 hp Nissan (same as a Tohatsu), and it did the same thing last year. Took the carb apart, cleaned it well, and it was fine. Had some varnish in the bowl and on the float. And someone needs to invent a pair of needle valve pliers. No human has fingers that small, and if they weren't allowed to cuss while putting it back in, it would simply never get done.

They thought it was a carb problem and I talked to another one and he said one ofthe plug wires could be bad. But in neutral it will idle all day long it's just when I put it in gear it bogs down. It's a brand new tank with new gas in it so I don't think that's it it wouldn't run like it does in neutral.

Take a plug wire off and arc it. If it sparks, it's good.

So, just to clarify, let me know if I have this all correct:

In neutral, it will idle fine, and you can wind it up fine.
In gear, it will idle fine, but when you go to wind it up it bogs down.

Right?

Your right about the neutral part but as soon as it gets put in gear it bogs down and I have to open the throttle all the way up to get it to stay running

when I was a boat mechanic I had a snap on mini pliers set that had a very fine tipped 90 and 45 degree bent needle nosed pliers that was awesome. Those and the pick set were essential for working in carbs.

Broccoli, I was an outboard mechanic for 4 years before they moved me to sales. They didn't move me because I was a good mechanic ;). They called me Johnny boomerang, because a fair amount of my repairs came right back lol!

If it is perfectly fine in neutral, but doesn't want to run while in gear, am I off to think that he should check the lower unit? Maybe the gears are getting bad? Bearings getting old and rusty? When's the last time the gear lube was changed?

Nope probably engine. Not too uncommon for them to do this. My guess at least

Checked the coil it was good and talked to a guy at CDI Electronics and explained to him what was going on and it sounded like the power pack had gone bad. So I found when it was installed 11/10 and it has a 2 year warranty on it so they are sending me another one and hopefully that will solve this problem

Its got to be either a fuel or air issue. Do you run ethanol gas in it?

I still say its the carb. Float or needle valve.

Could be the high speed is clogged but if it was the needle or float it wouldn't idle either. To run out but not have power sounds to me like a compression issue, or a bad seal or gasket somewhere in the power head that is letting gas/air go somewhere other than the cylinder

It would idle, but as the throttle opens the fuel/air mix will get more and more out of whack, bogging it down.

It will idle all day in neutral and out of the water in gear and rev up fine it's just when there is a load on the prop that the problem starts

Well, you didn't say it would spool up fine out of the water. Never mind on the carb  I don't know enough about outboards, but in the good old days, you could change the timing on a motor by turning the distributor cap a little at a time, then driving it up a hill, and when it started to bog down, you knew you advanced it too far. Maybe it could be a timing issue with your motor as well. (see my disclaimer above)
