HELP!!!

Postby aunt betty » Sat Dec 12, 2015 8:13 pm

Was messing around trying to get the engine to idle right and I found out why I was having trouble all of a sudden.
It quit and all it did was pop. Went and got compression tester. Top hole 30#...bottom hole 90#. Guess I cracked the rings or something.

So I tore this apart.

I swapped pistons and it would not run...so I went around and tightened the bolts...lol, missed a few.
Got it running then noticed that one of the power coils was throwin sparks.
Swapped that out and have the engine idling in my driveway as I type.
SWEET! I can hunt.

I'm so dumb sometimes. Swapped that piston for nothin. The old one is good.
Oh well, I learned how to rebuild a boat engine which is priceless.
If you can...get an engine that's toast and take it apart. It will be a challenge with some weird "how the fuck do I fit a wrench in there?" problems but once you can do it....awesome.

You'll end up with a pile like this but so?

Ooops, double-posted the picture. So excited I got the engine running.

EXACTLY. I do this all the time! I look at it like I'm paying myself to do something. I once rebuilt an automatic transmission with no prior knowledge of even how one worked. Now I do and I've even rebuilt a few more for friends saving them tons of money and earning a little bit for myself.

Soooo what was wrong, just a coil. Why was compression down? Did you surface the head flat?
Got to love the mud.

It had a blown head gasket I think. Just took one off the best motor I got that's crashed and stuck it on. Took me a good 8 hours of dickin around but I finally got it done.
When I got it running it was running real good. Had the cover off and saw them sparks so I fixed that while I was at it.
The motor always did seem a little weak. Would only do 17 or 18mph.
I bet I hit 22 or 23 next time out.

I knew it was having some sort of problem because it was sounding a little different.
Now I know what it was sort of.

It's on a 1640 Loweline. Little river-jon and it can get zippy.

By the way top motor 1983 15hp bottom motor 1985 9.9hp in case you didn't know. Best motor is 1983 15hp, hi rev motor, you can run that at 6500rpm.
Got to love the mud.

Cool, thanks.
The top motor is the one I'm running cuz the bottom one is really messed up. Chunks missing.
I took a couple parts off the bottom one so I could put the power pack and electric start on the top one. Sort of complicated but that's how it is.

Did you put a new impeller/waterpump kit in it? Change the lower unit grease?

Carry a spare plugs, prop, water pump, fuel pump, carb...complete lower unit too. It only takes 4 or 5 wrench sizes and a couple screwdrivers to change all them parts. I even have a tarp on board in case I have to do it in the field.

And a torque wrench.

Never torqued bolts on...my arm is a torque wrench and starts clicking in increments of ten ft-pounds after I get to around 40. It'll be fine. @ :D

Took the boat to the lake today. Left it strapped on the trailer, dunked the engine and ran it like I stole it for about 30 minutes hard. Looks like it's good to go.

What did you torque the head bolts at? Torque follow up, Torque it when you assembly it, then after warm up and cool down, then after 1 hour, then after 20 hrs. Then your good to go

Sounds a little rich. Did you hone the cylinders? Don't have that 2 stroke pop.

I had it way rich on purpose when I first started the motor. Tuned it later.
Ran it at the lake on the trailer and have hunted it once already. It's fine but still needed a couple little things tweeked.
The connector at the bottom of the starter was bent a tiny bit and was grounding out. Wire got pulled on or something. Had to pull-start the motor but got the starter figured out later.
Starts on one pull so I'm calling it good.
