My Boat I Have Questions

Postby PorkChop » Tue Jul 04, 2023 3:47 pm

Well now that I am recovered from surgery for the most part and feel like a new man it’s time to get the old boat going again. I have a few questions that maybe some of y’all could answer.

First question is this front deck. I don’t really need a fishing platform. Am I able to remove this? Pretty much it looks like it is just attached by welds. That is supposed to be a dry box in the middle. It’s not much bigger than the door and it is not effective as a dry box as it always fills up with water even after adding silicone to it.

Next question is any guesses as to why this boat is only rated for a 50 hp? Similar boats with the same person and weight ratings allow you to go up to a 75. This is a solid heavy boat and I would love to have the extra power. Brand is Alumacraft

This picture makes it look narrow but it’s not.

Some things that I need to do is number one get the motor running again. I’m sure with it sitting I will have to do some cleaning. Second is I need to add The required nighttime lighting. Wouldn’t mind putting those big front lights on it as well even though I don’t usually head out till sunrise. Also need to give it a good camo paint job.

I do not hunt out of this boat. All I use for is to transport my decoys and ground blinds. I typically park about 100 yards away from the spread. I keep it close just in case I need to go after a cripple that the dog cannot get. The lake I hunt is 90 something miles long and is a couple miles wide at some points and I also hunt the Missouri River.

I am open to suggestions as this boat is a blank canvas.

Yes, I would think you would be able to remove the front deck...

My guess would be that it's only rated 50 horsepower because it's a tiller steer boat...

The only problem with jumping to 75 horsepower is the added weight, 40s through 60s are usually in the same weight class... 75 to 115 are the next weight class up...

The best work around that I've seen is Yamaha makes an f70 that's in the 40 through 60 weight class... The moral of the story is do your homework and make sure you want to hang that heavy 75 horsepower motor on the back of that boat... I have a 1756 also with a 60 on it and it works pretty good... If I ever remoter I will look into the f70 (but there's nothing wrong with this 60 that I have) but I sure wouldn't want to hang a 75 on it... Also should mention that everything I'm talking about is four stroke...

Thank you! I currently have a 50 hp Yamaha four stroke. I just like speed. With the way the wind picks up here getting from point a to point B as fast as you can is a must on the lake!

I keep this name plate covered up and haven't looked at it in years so that's why I didn't want to mention any numbers in my earlier post, but as you can see you can bump it to 90 horsepower with remote steer... Mine says it's rated for 60 tiller steer so you might be able to get an updated name plate for yours?

Years back while researching for the boat that I have right now... There were people upgrading their 50 horsepower to a 60...
Your 50 is built on the same platform as the 60, so there might be a few things you can do to get 60 horsepower out of your 50?

If I remember correctly they use something similar to a restrictor plate like in NASCAR...
If you can get the air and fuel to it, it'll produce 60 horsepower...LOL...

Google is your friend in this case.
I think it'll be fine I've seen some crazy shit on WMAs with unlimited horsepower
Try and get added to the private Facebook group called outlaw oozers. Them guys are ate up with speed and tiller type boat engines.
Arkansas stuff tho.
If you want to soup up that Yamaha go to Arkansas and it's easy.
The ideal rig where I hunt is 18 feet long and has a 60 hp engine. It's nothing at all like a 60 mile long lake that's 2 miles wide. Two more feet and ten extra horses is going to be pricy. Just put a 60 on and roll.
Nice boat I had to look. I don't think I've ever seen a 1756mv.
Keep it

You don't need to lower that front deck, you need to raise it about 6 feet add lights and get out your bow.

Image

That is the deck I wish I had on my boat, but it would have to be removable.

This is the one that looks very much like my actual "deck."

Image

Not kidding, added a board to the top step so I can tie down my foot peddle for my trolling motor when I go bowfishing. I tried a few other things, but settled on this. It actually works quite well, just need to watch for swells when boats go by. Usually far enough back in away from the main channel that it's not an issue.

I regret not getting a 75 when I got my boat. 50 does the jobs, but

This is starting to be fun again.
Think you could use one of them fancy lights with a remote ?
I'm not sure my brain could handle it all but I see guys running big boats like that in timber with that deluxe lighting.
I run with an 8 inch flood-spot led light bar and a hand held rechargeable Stanley spotlight.
The spotlight is super handy.

The numbers.
A 20 inch light bar is 120 watts and is a ten Amp load on a 12 volt circuit.
I run a cheap 8 or 9?inch one from Walmart that's only a 3 Amp load. It matters.

Want to buy the cheap assed Chinese light bar?
No

Walmart has them small ones cheap.

Olly and I argued about these things and I was anti. lol
In time...he was right.
Damnit. Grrr

Another feature you might consider are flush mount led navigation lights for the bow.
Mine are so bright I can see with the nav lights pretty well.
