I'll take goat weed over sunflowers or millet, thank you.

Saturday evening was one of the most frustrating hunts I've ever had. I invited a buddy with his 2 boys, my nephew, David, and Tricia tagged along.

Lot of birds when we got there at 3 pm, birds just didn't move, and to make matters worth my Maxus is having a major trigger malfunction where it locks up after I shoot the first time, including the safety locking up. I bought it new in 2018, and it's done this before but a quick disassembling and working the bolt back and forth over the trigger assembly is put back in place fixed the issue. Yesterday after about 4 shots it locked up and I took it down 2 times but it never fixed it. I was pretty furious.

Only bright side is my wife made a great shot on a passing bird.

We have permission to hunt it again and we will try for the morning next time after today's hunt.

This morning we went to the bigger clearcut I posted pictures of.

I brought nephew Colin, then coworkers david and Spencer (and a friend) met us there. Birds started flying around 7:30 and flew good until about 10.

We all were able to get our 15, except for Colin who hasn't dove hunted much and is still learning when to shoot and how to mark his down birds and quickly retrieve them in the goatweed. Amos helped us find a few, but squirrels are still his favorite.

I shot the old gold I thought I was going to retire. Due to metal wear in receiver the follower backs out too far when the magazine is emptied, but I can simply push it back in with my thumb and load shells back into it, which only takes a few seconds unless it's really cold and my fingers aren't working like they should.

I guess I'll shoot this gold until it just flat out stops. This will be year 17.

I'm going to bring the Maxus back to dealer but at this point I don't trust it, and that's a bad thing for a shotgun.

Eric I'm a brown and gold guy also. You can wrap electrical tape around the Fowler and it catches the rim better. A Band-Aid for those cold mornings. I have a 99 model looks real similar to yours.

I've had the bolt buffer come apart on Browning golds, and fall down in the trigger mechanism. Just a thought on your maxus.
I have a buddy that had trouble with the trigger mechanism on his silver. It ended up being a small piece of metal in the trigger mechanism. He finally cleaned it well enough that it fell out. Has worked like a charm ever since. Not trying to claim I know the problem. Just some things that came to mind. Good luck!

Can you re type the first part? Looks like you're doing voice to text maybe?

I may try the tape idea.

The Maxus was picked up a month or so ago from gunsmith after a thorough cleaning.

Eric I'm a Browning gold guy also.
Sorry my proofreading sucks. Another reason why I don't post much.

The silver I was talking about also went to a gunsmith. They cleaned it and it worked fine when it came home. Then the problem reappeared.

GunBroker
I look at GunBroker every morning before I go to work.

Two of them are 20 gauges.

I only have one 3&1/2.

The rest are 3-inch guns.

Edit: I have a two and three quarter inch gold sporting Clay gun.

If you're serious tell me what you want I'll be on the lookout.

Mine is a 3 1/2 gold stalker

Serial number has to be MM or later. 90's 3.5 models were bad.

Mine is a 26", I could go 26-30".

I do check the GB site occasionally, and have seen mostly late 90's model 3.5" golds and I stay away from those year models.

Different direction as in......more browning's, or a more drastic change of course?

Not sure yet Darren. I don't like the A5. Was wanting to like my Maxus.

No chance of alternative brand? Whether another gas gun or, oh no, crossing to the inertia game?

I'm not ruling out anything at this point. Will know a little more this evening after bringing Maxus to dealer. My beautiful bride says I need a gun that works. So there's that

Productive work day at camp for those that could be there, including my sweet wife who worked on the inside while we worked at the pits.

Bush hogged the weeds and grasses behind the south pit that were over head high.

Then we went to the middle blind in the rice and pumped it.

Beautiful cool morning in the delta, with temp staying under 70 until close to lunch.

Can't underestimate how much Tricia got done inside the camp. It was pretty funky, after being closed up since the last clients used it back in January. Left the window unit running to keep it fresh.

Specks should be showing up in a few weeks. Wish the doves would congregate in the burnt corn stubble around the camp, but they aren't there yet.

I can't remember in my 37 years belonging to our club that a wife of a member came to the camp to help clean up. And your wife was smiling too.

Preseason

Postby Ericdc » Sun Sep 20, 2020 11:48 am

What can I say?

All previous visits were just to look around, this time I asked if she'd help clean a little while we got muddy at the pits.

She likes it over there, and has always been a hard worker. She's as happy for me to have a camp now as I am to have one.

She's never probably going to be a full fledged hunter, but she goes with me enough to understand it and appreciate it.

I hate to see to when hunting season is a point of contention in a marriage for other couples.

After much thought and research I've decided to sell my browning Maxus back to my dealer once it gets back from browning. So I brought this home today. Michael's Men's Store in Homer, LA. If you're ever up that way for anything, go visit them. I haven't found a dealer with better prices on all the main gun manufacturers.
