The 2013 Big Game thread

Postby Bulldog0156 » Sun Sep 15, 2013 9:18 am

Figured I'd start a thread for all the big game hunters to share their hunting stories and photos.

I've gotten out for deer a few times. Saw one pretty nice buck yesterday but was never able to get close. I've been finding antlers every time out so far though!

Already have my 500lb feeder spinning 4 times a day. Box blind is reinsullated, got a little frigid last year when it would hit low 30's. Also have a new French press I'm going to set up in there for the long rough waits we have to put in for hopes of Bambi's daddy.

I made two rookie mistakes last night within 20 minutes, costing me two shots (maybe two- one for damn sure). Never even got to draw.

Tongue in cheek pussy Texas deer hunting. My attempt to be clever didn't work as usual  Going to sit in a box is more work than I usually do for deer. Unless I'm feeling sporty with the bow and ducks aren't in.

What'd you do?

Focused in on a deer I saw coming in from my 2 o'clock, about 60 yards through the woods. I picked up my bow and started to stand without looking around. Got halfway up, and saw movement from the corner of my left eye. Froze, and looked, and there's mama doe, perfectly broadside, about ten yards from my tree. Looking right at me. She took off but didn't blow, and when she ran, the other for did too.

Then I heard what I swore was a squirrel coming behind me, and didn't bother looking (squirrels had been fucking with me all night). That was actually doe #3, who I didn't know was a doe because I didn't turn my dumb ass around and look, too worried about seeing if doe #1 was going to come back. But I knew it was a doe when she blew about 5 times while crashing through the woods running away because she caught wind of me from about 15 yards behind me.

Oh well. My head wasn't in the game, I guess.

We have been totally surrounded by deer. Could of had two more but had eyes on us and couldn't move or had others wind us.

Too small. My labs are bigger.
Uncle Jim just shot one sitting with me. Had four more run across the field while dragging his up by the blind.

I had 3 come in to about 25 yards, but they just wouldn't clear the last couple saplings. I suspect the AR is in order next time I sit that stand. That's 2 times I've sat it, and had 8 deer within 25 yards, and haven't even drawn the bow. But you can bet damn sure when I get there with the AR I'm gonna have a 10 pointer walk by at 10 yards, since it isn't rifle season.

Can you not take both to the stand?

Lets not go down that road...

Seems like it would be the perfect scenario of the theory of medium.

One or the other before hand. Choosing to take both would disrupt the theory.
