Post-Season '21-'22

Work day at the bunkie camp saturday for a lil camp addition. Field is in rice, water was being pumped on to it while we were there and bayou was running high so finally got some decent rain around there, road in was pretty slick.

Was glad to find the blind bone dry and free of black widows for now, has some bushes growing up around it. Staked it off with flags per our usual to (hopefully) keep farmer from mowing it all down.

Some nearby fields were crawfished, and still being fished, but the ones around the blind were not.

Not sweating it for now; we've long had too little cover to work with so having to hack some down in November would be largely a welcome task. Hack down just enough.....

Besides, bush trimming in November beats heck out of June.

Just a thought. Would it look more natural if you mowed it down with time to grow back some before season. I don't know the plants, but will you just have a bunch of stalks if you let it get 10' tall before you cut it down. If you leveled it with enough time to regrow a couple feet, it might look more natural.

Which reminds me I need to go level a bush on the corner of one of our goose blinds. It's gotten way too tall and thick. I like to thin it out so I can look and shoot through it, but it still hides me when I tuck in behind it. That is until some dumbass from the club decided to level it to the ground making it harder to hide and keep an eye on circling birds

Do as you wish, but it's a safe bet you'll not be "trimming brush" but dealing with the stumps of what shaded out more congruous growth come fall.

Good points above, will keep an eye on it. In past years there was some heavy cane-like grass that grew there that we'd have to break down, cut down with hedge trimmer to make hunt-ready. It's far from out of control right now and we have plans to be back up before too long to cut fire wood and such, clean up a deer hunt trail to feeder, etc.

Wonder if I could just (try) to keep trimming it back on subsequent visits in an effort to keep it there but keep it at ideal/manageable height??

Inside of camp had what I estimated to be 1.2 to 1.3 bazillion dead wasps on the floor, and a snake skin hanging from the highest light fixture attached at the peak of the roof/ceiling.

Dunno. Do know that, like Roseau cane, ragweed staubs are a pain if not nipped while the plants are young and have time to rot before season. Wouldn't want it having a chance to reseed and take over the levee, either.

There's absolutely no more consistent method of putting pintails in your face than scratching out a limit of them. Manage that, and it will seem like every one you see after wants to land.

There's 2's everywhere in stock, and all 3". Shooting GW mostly I don't want to be too heavy, and those 23/4 work just fine on decoying big ducks. I had to get a case of 3" #4 to finish the the season last year and we still have a few boxes left over. Blake and share the case's we buy.

Don't know if you've any interest in such, Darren, but the banding crew will be working blue-wings near Krotz Springs again this weekend and seeking hands. Requires waders and willingness to meet at 5:10 AM Saturday and/or Sunday morning.

Probably about as near to you as such gatherings ever get.

Hope to see them again in about 5 months. Certainly was striking of how many more drakes there were than hens; can't recall a specific count to get a ratio but pretty danged obvious, seemed like I compiled crate after crate of white crescents and far too few crates of brown with blue patches. Sure hope (for all of us) that those gals find water + grass and are successful.

Yea I couldn’t make it this last wknd on 4/1-4/2
Won’t be able to make Easter wknd but hope to get in on it sometime
