Tuesday 12/28/2021
Delacroix
Johnny and I with Harry
South/SE winds 5-15, mostly cloudy, 70 to start

Had just enough wind to keep the bugs at bay and had nice flights of teal from jump. The few grays that worked didn’t want to get right but overall made most of our chances count, done in an hour. Harry was huge on one lively gray across the pond and another teal swimming off, both came back to hand. Got out before it got too hot

(12) 1 wigeon, 2 grays, 9 GW teal

Indeed! Good to see folks still seeing and killin. I feared all these big south winds for over a week would move these ducks northward but it appears they are holding steady!

Has me worrying about his leaving birds for what may - or may not - come by the mudhole in the morning...

Wednesday 12/29/2021
Klondike, La fresh marsh
Rick, Johnny and I with Marsh
Winds southerly 5-10+, mostly to partly cloudy, some fog early

Slow to start but the squealers got going and started buying in fairly well, some hovering overhead, some all the way in. Given other birds were pretty scarce and smart with the stale weather, we were more than happy to take all the squealers we could get, to the tune of apparently smashing the blind record. Last group came in as pretty as they could, took the whole flock to wrap us up about 8:30. Great food last night and this morning, just a great trip all around. Thanks Rick!

(18) 16 black belly whistlers, 1 mallard, 1 green wing teal

Marsh was huge today rounding up too many long crips

At Holly Beach we don't have any Squealers, can't remember anyone killing one. In the first pic there appears to be a Model 12.
Glad y'all had a good hunt.

Thought you’d bring ducks, but a mudhole record of squealers probably wouldn’t have been my first guess! Awesome hunt!

It's a compliment to Darren and Johnny, in that knowing them to be good shots, I indulged an itch to bring my 16ga Model 12, a gun I sometimes struggle with (due to its forward safety and action) instead of my familiar semi-auto 20. Did, indeed, struggle with the safety, but enjoyed getting the old gun out enough to take it again with tomorrow's party of three, despite not knowing them.

Note to log I omitted......it was HOT. Eyeing Sunday's forecast of low forties and GETTIN IT from the N/NW. By Monday, very little wind in forecast, just cold and clear, that's not going to cut it for me especially with very little pressure as everyone goes back to work.

Sun. 1/2/2021
Bunkie area farm
David R. and his two young sons, Johnny and I w/ Harry
post-front glory, N/NW winds 15-25+, 50's falling to 40's, heavy clouds, spitting rain at times

David and his son's scratched in the blind yesterday in the heat and south winds so I had high hopes we'd get them some shooting behind the front this morning. Turned out just fine and they indeed got to burn some shells. Whole lot of wind kept many of the bigger bunches of big ducks from working down but had some nice chances to put a few together. Better shooting and we get for sure 3-5 more ducks. Very few teal and spoons compared to recent hunts but more pins, grays and mallards seen and working.

Had a 4-pack of specks in plenty decent range for my end of blind but didn't call shot trying to get them to do one more bank toward the far end of the blind so all could shoot...........they bailed. STILL can see them! But did chip down a beautiful blue from a bunch that happened to be just a bit lower than the rest of the goose flight, which was massive for much of the morning. Harry was able to catch him when he tried to take flight from adjacent cut, thankfully. Tons and tons of snows with fair many specks too all over us. A proper goose set up with better hiding and stronger calling likely would have made a pile.

(9) 4 GW teal, 1 BW teal, 2 grays, 1 mallard, 1 pintail, 1 blue goose

Pretty much exactly what I hope for, was in the low 70s when I left BR, 50s when we pulled up at farm

Still struggling to not check weather for late this week into this weekend down on the coast, because some clowns with enough sway thought it a good idea to trade this week for one three weeks from now with birds that are three weeks smarter.

With a good marine forecast in our marsh, to boot

SATURDAY
Southeast winds 15 to 20 knots. Waves 3 to 5 feet.
Dominant period 4 seconds. Chance of showers through the day.
Slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

SATURDAY NIGHT
Southeast winds 15 to 20 knots. Waves 2 to
4 feet. Dominant period 4 seconds. Slight chance of thunderstorms
in the evening. Showers likely through the night.

SUNDAY
South winds 10 to 15 knots. Waves 2 to 4 feet. Dominant
period 4 seconds. Showers likely in the morning, then showers and
slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

SUNDAY NIGHT
Southwest winds 10 to 15 knots becoming northwest
15 to 20 knots after midnight. Waves 2 to 4 feet. Dominant period
4 seconds. Chance of showers and slight chance of thunderstorms.

Bunkie blind logged 8 birds each day over the weekend; going to try it in the AM behind this front then head south for a marsh outing Tuesday AM.

Mon. 1/10/22
Bunkie area farm
FIL Mike & I w/ Harry
post-front rippin north wind, cloudy skies that eventually cleared out, a cold low 40s in the wind

Two of a trio of spoons that worked pretty right at LST stayed with us and thought that a good omen, until we didn't fire at another duck for the remainder of the hunt. Not a teal seen all morning. A nice bunch of grays looked to be trying to get in while I was working Harry on the further of the two spoons off the bat and that was it. Other ducks were high and staying up. There were, however, tons of geese again, and managed to get a pair of specks near "enough" to chip one down and let Harry run it down in the rear cut. The chase made the hunt for us with a pretty, though lively, bird brought to hand, first speck of the season.

2 spoons, 1 speck

FIL & speck
IMG_9242.JPG

There were a lot of birds, mixed ducks and geese both, in places there hadn't been on the way out so seemed to be a shuffle of some degree with the front.
IMG_9251.JPG

Post-hunt headed south to the marsh camp to try them tomorrow down this way. Wind outside is rippin N/NE, hoping more of the slight eastern component sticks to keep the tide from dumping out.
