2021 - 2022 DUCK SEASON

2021 - 2022 DUCK SEASON

Postby MARSH BEAR » Mon Nov 08, 2021 9:32 am

Date: Saturday, Nov 6, 2021 - Youth and Veterans hunt

Hunters: William, Matthew, and me with Abby

Temp: 52 degrees, NNE wind 8 - 10 mph, clear

We had plenty of opportunities, but only a few ducks actually decoyed, most made their approach then moved to one side or the other. The boys shot well because most shots were on the edge of being too far, but all were dead on the water. It appeared the ducks shied away from the mojos, kinda early in the season for that.
One other blind hunted, 1 youth, he got 3 ducks - 2 1/2 boxes of shells - he had opportunity.

Total: 2 - Bluewing teal, 3 - Greenwing teal, 12 - Gadwall, 1 - Wigeon

Sunday, Nov 7, 2021 - last day of youth, veterans hunt

Hunters: William, Matthew, and I with Abby

Temp: 52 degrees, wind 0 - 5 mph, NE

Not as many ducks around as yesterday - it was slow. Only put out 1 mojo and wished I had not put out that one. Did not shoot for the first 1 1/2 hours. Neither day did we see any flight birds, Saturday had more ducks moving, but they were mostly 1 - 5 in a group.
On the way back to the boat landing on Sunday we did see some ducks get up, but not the number we were hoping for.
The water dropped about 5 inches from last week, but still needs to drop at least another 5 inches.

Total: 3 - Greenwing teal, 3 - Gadwall, 3 - Spoonies

Nice hunts ! Every time i'm tempted to go with a spinner I keep wrangling myself back to not because the log says I regret it every time. Just find more often than not that my grays bounce off it, but then others swear grays eat them up for them.

If they touch their toes and drop on a spinner, let 'em. If they don't touch their toes, kill it.

I will be going to the camp this afternoon - tomorrow is my big shopping day - Buddy and I go to Sam's and Walmart in Lake Charles to buy all the paper products, trash bags, charcoal w/lighter, breakfast foods (biscuits, sausage, eggs, etc), coffee and all the different things our members need for their coffee, lunch meats, cheese, bread, washing detergent, etc - you get the picture, about $1,300 worth of stuff.
Then come back may or may not have help putting all the "stuff" away and then relax

Always fun gathering and getting those things needed for the season, and it just builds the anticipation. Enjoy your weekend at the camp MB

Sounds a lot more like a work day than installing blinds. Ugh.

Saturday, Nov 13, 2021 - opening of duck season

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 48 degrees wind 8 - 12mph WNW

We drew blind #4, our smallest pond in the lease, but with the wind felt it was a good blind. We started out slow with lots of shooting all around us. There was a bind behind us on another lease that shot constantly, they must have a better source of shotgun shells than I have. As usual most of our ducks early were blown out by other blinds shooting, a blessing we realized later. When most of the other blinds slowed down the Greys started moving and they liked our little hole. #4 blind has a lot grass all around, you really should not hunt it if you don't have a dog. Had a duck fall behind us that Abby could not find, until we shot another duck that landed in the same area, and she came back with 2 ducks.

Total: 2 - Greenwing teal, 1 - Bluewing teal, 9 - Gadwall

Life is good.

Sunday, Nov 14, 2021

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 45 degrees, wind 1 - 5 ESE

I just thought there was shooting yesterday, sounded like a war zone today. Teal were moving everywhere saw flight after flight moving mostly north to south. We did not shoot as well today as yesterday, but the ducks gave us ample opportunity. Yesterday all of our blinds got limits, but not today - they all saw lots of teal but most were not coming to the blinds.

Total: 4 - greenwing teal, 3 - bluewing teal, 5 - Gadwall

I forgot to post this, but one of the blinds on Sunday killed a solid white spoonbill, only the bill and eyes had normal color. I saw the bird but did not have my phone to take a picture

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 48 degrees, wind 15 - 20 mph NW

Almost too windy, ducks would get up then go right back down. The 'wind would die down a little then come back strong. Saw very few teal this morning, it was slow until about 9:oo when the bigger ducks started to move. That much wind makes hitting the ducks a little more difficult. We did have 3 ducks come straight into the decoys, then split two came to my side the other went to Buddy. Buddy said those are mallards, I didn't see any mallards - the 2 that came to my side were Gadwall and the other that went to Buddy's side was a green head mallard.

Total: 2 - greenwing teal, 1 - mallard, 7 - gadwall

Saturday, Nov 20, 2021

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 52 degrees, wind 5 - 8 mph NE, much better than yesterday

The teal showed up today - we had a group of about 25 pass outside of gun range, I gave them a peep, they hooked back straight into the decoys, my first shot I got 2, my second shot I got 2, my third shot I wiffed, Buddy also got 2 on his first shot then wiffed on his next 2 shots. I sent Abby out and she picked up a teal brought it back, went out the second time she came back with 2 teal, sent her out the third time and she brought 3 back, Buddy says she is lazy, I call it efficient.

Total: 7 - green wing teal, 5 - gadwall

Sunday, Nov 21, 2021

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 64 degrees, wind 4 - 6 mph E, FOG

It stayed foggy until 10:00 when we left. We had a group of 4 Gadwall decoy perfectly to the mojos, we got all 4, then it was 1 and 2, mostly none. Abby did pick up 2 of gadwall on one retrieve that were close together, then later made a long retrieve on a wounded Gadwall. We shot very well - good thing because there were very few opportunities.

Total - 2 - greenwing teal, 6 - gadwall, 2 - spoonies

Temp: 52 degrees, wind ENE 5 - 10 mph, clear

Decent amount of ducks moving around, but nothing listens to the call. As I stated before all of our bluewing teal have left, and the greenwings come and go, but the Gadwall seem to be hanging around. The boys shot very well considering the limited shooting they have done. Abby is making it a habit to pick up more than 1 duck if the opportunity is there. She picked up 2 teal on one retrieve, and 2 Gadwall on another retrieve.

Totals: 4 - greenwing teal, 2 - canvasback, 12 - gadwall

Not as many ducks today as yesterday. The lease manager for the oil company we lease from stopped by when we were unloading the boat to find out how we did - he said most of the teal and grey ducks have moved west of Hwy 27 where the water is very shallow. William shot very well today, Matthew did not have his "A" game today, but still did OK. Papa John only shoots the left overs.
