Great hunt on 11/26 - you are killing bluewing teal by the truck load and we have none - hope it continues for you

Was a fun first split. I plan to deer hunt until the second split opens side from my trip to Texas at end of next week for 2 days of tank hunting.

Date: 12/18/21

Time: packed up at 10:00 to beat rain

Location: Scott's brake near Sterlington

Cloud Cover: heavy misting to partly sunny back to clouds

Wind Direction and Velocity: light SW to 5-10 WSW

Temperature: 60's real warm

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: first time I've hunted with scott since 2017. The previous 10 years we hunted a lot together. Best wood duck shoot I've been on in a while.

Waterfowl Activity: it's fun to watch that wood ducks leave out at daylight only to come back in big groups about 7:30-9:00 am...and often decoy. Saw a couple gadwall, pintail, mallards, and spoons.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: gadwall came pretty, mallards wouldn't do anything

Hunters: scott, his dad, Scott's son 7 year old Cullen, and me

Guns:

Malfunctions: cullen fell off steps into water when we were packing up after grandpas told him not to get on steps, he cried but wasn't hurt except his pride.

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: they use a trolling motor to put a lot of movement in spread.

Kudos: we shot really well

curses: lack of big ducks and teal

Birds By Species:
11 wood ducks
3 gadwall

Photo Ops:
One of my favorite places to hunt.

Nice Woodrow hunt
Cullen reminds me of a time that one of my young cousins fell into the water, while leaning off of our houseboat one duck season, right after my uncle's threat of "if you fall in the water, I'm gonna pull you out by your hair"...............he did

Date: 12/24/21

Time: finished up around 11:30

Location: marsh

Cloud Cover: mostly clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: light south to calm to SE to SW 10-15 mph

Temperature: warmest hunt ever?

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: fun hunt with a buddy, my brothers, and nephew

Waterfowl Activity: pretty slow early on then seemed to get better as morning went on . We had 10 birds at 10:00 am based on a text to my lovely bride.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: big ducks worked better than most of the teal.

Hunters: rod, Ryan, corey, me and Simon watching.

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): rod's dog cash

Special Equipment: 4 mojos and a wonderduck (think mojos hurt us some on teal)

Kudos: had a good time and shot pretty well. I called in a mottled drake and shot it over the decoys. My first mottled I can think of.

curses: wish the pintails would have worked better, but still a very enjoyable hunt.

Birds By Species:
7 shovelers
2 mallards
1 mottled
8 blue winged teal
6 green winged teal

I hope you find yourself in bunkie next weekend for what looks to be a big front.

I'm going to plan to hunt Saturday through Monday. One of those days should be pretty good.

Was supposed to be headed to north Texas to hunt tomorrow through Thursday with MF Waterfowl out of Tigertown, TX. Outfitter called this morning and said they have very few birds and what they have are completely nocturnal due to the hot weather so we cancelled the trip.

It's a real bummer because 2 of the guys in our group are seniors and this was their senior trip of sorts.

I appreciate the Mallicote's being upfront and honest about the situation.

We had 2 bad trips to Oklahoma in previous years and a 3rd bad trip would have been really tough to take.

So...I'm cranking up the work truck and headed to check loggers

Right now models are telling me I won't be missing much of anything for "weather" on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday will be the day. By Monday, winds are back down, just clear and pretty cold. We'll see

Was looking back over logs and clear, cold ,and no wind have matched with poor success for me over the years after a big front. The next day with a south wind has typically been more productive. But I still go and freeze my toes off “just in case”.

NNE 5-10 here looks pretty darn good for Monday. Tuesday is the no wind day. Sunday will be ripping 15-20 gusts to 25. Not a big fan of super strong winds but I’ll be there just in case. I do like the falling temps on Monday from the morning high mid-50's to 40 by early afternoon.

Getting ready to hunt hard the next 3 days with friends and family.

If anything, it'll be nice hunting a big weather change and having some hope.
