Louisiana

Postby Ericdc » Sun Jan 02, 2022 4:25 pm

Date: 1/2/22

Time: rode it till 1 pm

Location: Perry's spot

Cloud Cover: heavy with on and off drizzle

Wind Direction and Velocity: NW 5-10 then 15-20 NW

Temperature: 60's to 30's

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: pretty place to spend a morning.

Waterfowl Activity: not as much as we thought we'd see but should have been enough had I been able to hit anything.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: what wanted in came pretty good except for some gadwall that bumped at last minute after dropping from way up.

Hunters: Perry and I

Guns:

Malfunctions: just me missing too many

Dog(s): moon

Special Equipment:

Kudos: moon made a great retrieve on a gadwall that fell in thick cover. Perry tripled on our first opp.

curses:

Birds By Species:
1 mallard
1 gadwall
1 wood duck
1 shoveler
3 green winged teal

Photo Ops:

Postby Ericdc » Mon Jan 03, 2022 5:23 pm

Date: 1/3/22

Time: hunted till 11

Location: Perry's other spot

Cloud Cover: clear, absolutely beautiful

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNW becoming NNE 8-12 mph (perfect)

Temperature: high 20's to 30's

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: hunted a beautiful place on a beautiful day when a lot of folks had to go back to work.

Waterfowl Activity: pretty slow start then on and off big duck flight till we left

Waterfowl Responsiveness: mostly gadwall and we just couldn't do much with the bigger bunches. Wished they would have broken up but they seemed to gang one once 1 bunch would start working.

Hunters: me, brother corey, and Perry

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): moon

Special Equipment: 2 spinners

Kudos: we had a nice safe morning and got to see a good many ducks

curses: gadwall being gadwall, and we let a nice bunch get out when they semi committed over the decoys with only 1 landing. But had they finished it would have been something I wouldn't forget.

Birds By Species: 5 gadwall

Good time despite my failure to call the shot on a nice bunch of gaddies that didn’t do it right but got right enough for several to meet their demise had I done so. Maybe next time!

Glad to see that you were able to hunt a couple of days with Perry, and kill some birds, especially on the weather change  Damn Gadwalls can go Einsteinian on you in a heartbeat, and glad to see that ya'll fooled some of them. It's not always the birds we kill that keeps us going back. Sometimes it is the birds that we didn't shoot that tend to seal that memory in place. Thanks for the reports

Date: 1/6/22

Time: stayed till noon

Location: friend's pit in Jones. Farmer was unable to plant rice but had excellent volunteer crop.

Cloud Cover: heavy

Wind Direction and Velocity: 10-15 NNE to NNW

Temperature: 40's to 30's

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: been in contact with Bob since the spring when I had opportunity join lease but was already committed to a Kansas trip and Texas trip (Texas trip ended up being cancelled). Told him I couldn't do it this season but maybe next year. They've got a really nice pit that's hidden very well in the western side of a permanent turn row.

Waterfowl Activity: they've got some local mallards that have been coming early. They came but all lit wide. As morning progressed we started seeing more and more flights of mostly pintail but some mallards out of north but they weren't ready to stop yet. Only saw 1 group of teal up high... the lack of green wings has hurt their numbers this year.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: the 1 pair of mallards that did work were shot feet down right where they should be.

Hunters: bob, johnny and I

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): me

Special Equipment: no spinners used

Kudos: had a good time and was invited to hunt with them again anytime there was room. Enjoyed listening to guys who've been hunting this same farm for 40 years call ducks and tell me the history of this farm.

curses: lack of working birds on what we thought would be a strong flight.

Birds By Species:
2 mallards

Bummer to hear of their apparent shortage of green wings, seems to me most everyone else been wrecking them from AR to SE La marsh; and thank goodness for them.

They don't have a big area of slick water but we just didn't see any but that one bunch on what I thought should be a teal day....on the other have it looks like the mallards do like it. Hoping they do well today in the cold sun and wind.

Postby Ericdc » Mon Jan 10, 2022 7:24 pm

Date: 1/10/22

Time: left pit at 11:15, got to deer lease at 3:15

Location: Jones

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: perfect 10-15 NNE

Temperature: 30's, ice in the stubble

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: pretty day just not many birds

Waterfowl Activity: decent flurry before shooting time fizzled

Waterfowl Responsiveness: speck came as pretty as you'd want, which was rewarding for me and the guys who rarely kill geese and don't really bother calling at them.

Hunters: me bob and Tommy

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): me

Special Equipment: we tried 3 mojos with remotes to pull high flyers but they didn't do anything different than last week.

Kudos: the speck was very rewarding for me and quickest ever deer hunt. Driving in to my lease, find a big spike in my food plot and shot him at 70 yards from the truck.

curses: lack of flight

Birds By Species:
1 speck
1 pintail
1 green winged teal
1 140-150 lb spike

Date: 1/20/22

Time: left at 10:30

Location: Jones pit

Cloud Cover: heavy to mostly clear by 8

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNE 15-20

Temperature: low 30's

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: hoped for new ducks and got our wish.

Waterfowl Activity: really good green winged teal flight for first 20 minutes then nothing

Waterfowl Responsiveness: teal came as pretty as you'd like. 4 different groups either hovering or landing in decoys.

Had 2 low speck ops later in morning but they were also really spooky acting after initially looking really interested. (No mojos out, so I guess just spooky of duck decoys. )

Hunters: me Bob and Tommy

Guns:

Malfunctions: I had a first shell fail to fire on 2nd or 3rd teal bunch that threw me off.

Dog(s): me

Special Equipment: just decoys

Kudos: teal showed

curses: couldn't hit em, no excuses, just excited to see em but couldn't hit em.

Birds By Species:
4 green winged teal recovered (lost 2 others)

Seems you need a bit more retriever training. Lets work on that during the off season.

Haha the 2 unrecovered fell in non manipulated fully headed flooded rice. I did find one that the other 2 guys had walked right past though!

It was so good to see the teal like that, but man we shot like some of Rick's first timers.

Time: stayed till noon curfew

Location: marsh

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNE 12-15

Temperature: around 30 to 40

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: lotta ice but enough open

Waterfowl Activity: no traffic at all, only birds moving were just boiling occasionally from boat traffic

Waterfowl Responsiveness: none

Hunters: rod and I

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): cash

Special Equipment: spinners mostly off

Kudos: first slow hunt this season here. Was 5 for 5, so no complaints.

curses: need south wind to come back but don't look like it will

That worked out well. I had covid 2 weeks ago. Thought I was clear. Something slid in behind it and thumped me. Whatever this is was way worse than covid. Tested negative yesterday so who knows.
