Friends place south of holmwood/flooded cow pasture
Left @930 or so
We were trying to target a south wind and foggy morning and picked yesterday vs today. Seems either weren’t ideal but made it work.
Thank goodness for the greenwings.
Shot well on 2 wads of them. Pintails and specks gave us the bird majority of the morning, i blame lack of no wind.
As always fun place to hunt where you can ride a bike all the way to blind, in this case an Argo.
Image
Found our 2 long fall cripples that made 20. We would’ve had to been aces to get 4 more. 3 pins, 2 spoons 1 wood duck 14 gwt
Did pass on a few jacks & spoons early.

#2 blind
Me and Curry (never shot anything but Woodies off the creek)
7 bwt
1 gwt
Left @945.
Curry had been wanting to go, and had to decline the opener spot which would’ve been hectic had he come after seeing how he treated this morning. He was a little excited with all the other “birds” as I call them mixed in with the little few ducks we saw.
Saw less than 75 big ducks.
Got one group of 15-20 decoy which was my main goal as I had been telling him to focus in one direction (down wind) as that’s how they should approach, and hold tight til I say go.
Good time and always like teaching new duck hunters.
Curses: one of the bolts that hold handle onto boat motor broke so I had no steering to the left. Had to grab the motor itself with one hand to force it to turn that way. Kind of booger to do while other hand on the throttle. Would be near impossible if it was a longtail

Longtail would have been a BIG booger, for sure. At least you got to hunt....LOL!

Watched South Camron graduate the 16 seniors the storms couldn't wash away, which included a grandson, and celebrated after with a crawfish boil several Oak Grove guides attended this morning. And the word is that the burns is mostly mud flat with tons of Walter's millet popping out of the cracks. Worry is that its timing may be too soon for the regular season, but September teal should be something special over your way.

Thanks for the info Rick. I’ve yet to
Make a trip down there to only look from the boat launch.
I will make it down at some point though, I’d like to document with some photos for memory sake

This was before I was on the lease but we, 2 brothers, and I would always attend workdays. Pictured ericDC weed eating to show open water in one the ponds. Not sure what year. Somewhere between 07-11

2010 and 2011 were drought years when we couldn't have hunted anything if CR hadn't spent $168,000 pumping the first and another $70,000 the second:

Had to grind the mudhole umpteen times:

just to have a wet slurry to hunt. Sucked to be the coyote:
2011-2012hunting007-5a.jpg

But the drought apparently also made them the mudhole's high water marks for mallards during my time there, of we shot nearly 10x as many in each, just ten years past, as during our last one.

Not expecting a repeat this year - except, of course, for the grinding...

Got 4” of rain since last Sunday in the marsh. Gave us enough water to float boats loaded with decoys. Hate they stayed out this long but this was our first chance at getting them out since last day of season. It was a nice day to be in the marsh. Wind was steady and we were done before 1230.
With the low water levels there is some serious SAVs growing. I kinda got excited today but we are a long ways off still. Should be nearing 100 days until teal opener.

Probably June 1 would be around the 100-day mark with a Sept 10 opener? May be late but getting them out now better than not at all given the inevitable sun damage. Still in good shape?

You know Darren after we picked them up, I asked my cousins if they thought they saw any “newer” ones and I’m not sure we even had but 2 dozen decoys that were bought in the past 3 years or so.
We’ve been “coot-ing” all of our most faded decoys. Still have lots of brown decoys but anything with color is getting slim. And I’m to the point if we don’t start shooting big ducks again then no need in spending the money.

Moon’s in semi-retirement mode like her ole man but her replacement Skye (another black female) will be ready to roll maybe by teal season but certainly by big duck opener.
