Thanks guys! I will pass on the congratulations to Vinny Quack!!

We went out for cranes again this morning. We set up more north in the field to be more under their flight path but as it goes they flew even further north this morning. I would say crane numbers doubled from yesterday. Also seeing a lot of swans which they usually make up the tail end of the migration. I think that big storm in Alaska has everything messed up for the birds that come from there.

Drove by that spot where all the mallards were and you could see them from about 2 miles away circling. They were getting the cattle out of the other spot to the north where I figured the birds were hanging out so I’m guessing they kicked them up. I need to make time to hunt them but I really like getting after the cranes while they are here.

Date: 13 October 2022

Time: Evening

Location: ND

Cloud Cover: Mostly Sunny Clouds moved in at the end of shooting time

Wind Direction and Velocity: 25 to 35 mph and not sure what the gusts were but at one point it blew my hat off and I had a hard time finding it in the tall grass.

Temperature: 51°

Moon phase: Mostly full but decreasing

Notes: This is the same spot that I flushed all those mallards out the other day. Saw them flying around this morning so I figured I would give it a shot. Actually almost did not go because none of the kids could hunt. either they were working or they’re sick. Sarah is redoing the counters so she wasn’t going to go either but I figured it was probably best for me to get out of the house. When I got there I walked in and the first two spots I checked did not have any ducks. I checked more up wind and there was no more than 300. I flushed them off and they went to the north east. All my birds came from the south east so I will have to figure out where those other birds are going to. Most birds did not look at me and if they did they just got a little lower and then kept on going. Once I started calling I was able to break One or two birds off. I know I hit a Fifth Greenhead as it looked like he was going down but then he recovered. I was down in the valley so I lost sight of him once he was over the hill. We did spend about 30 minutes after I was done picking up looking for it in the field that it was flying over but we were fighting light. I will go out there again tomorrow afternoon to try again to see if we find it as I left my glasses case there. For all I know though it could be sleeping on the water somewhere right now perfectly fine. I figured the right thing to do was to count it as part of my limit. it was a nice little hunt. Definitely better than sitting at home!!

Waterfowl Activity: lots of small bunches of mallards. My first shot I did scare up some geese that were a couple hundred yards down wind in a different pothole. Never knew they were there. Had a group of three Pintails flyby and there was a very nice Drake in it and then I had another Drake pintail fly right by me in shooting range but I let him fly.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Not very but enough cupped in for a look.

Hunters: just me

Guns: SX4

Malfunctions: none

Dog(s): Reaper

Special Equipment: 1 not so lucky duck and a doz decoys. I brought three dozen with me and I wish I would’ve set them all up as I think it might’ve made a difference. However the bottom of this pothole was very sticky and was pulling my chest waders off my feet and since I was alone I figured it was best to play it safe

Curses: what?

Kudos: to me for not being a slug

Birds By Species: 4 greenheads

Hunting over gooze that'll pull your waders off? Been there done that it sux.

When my grandkids got old enough to swim at the lake my wife and I took them a lot and found all the ducky spots with hard bottoms.
Ironically that's where people fish.
I started picking my spots by "can you wade there?".
If you think gooze is what works it does. I hunt over it still but from a boat.
Get a kayak I guess?

Great hunt PC - let's take a look at your decision making - stay home or go duck hunting, one more time - stay home or go duck hunting - good decision - go duck hunting :D

I would say due to greed and stupidity ha ha. I had a group of three go by a little bit earlier and there was that real nice one in there and the one that came right through the Decoys was an ugly Drake so I figured it was early enough in the afternoon that I would take my chances of that nice one coming back which it never did. Also there was a group of four mallards behind it and of course they did not come in either.

Yeah I really didn’t wanna hunt it because I wanted to get the kids here but I’ve also learned that if you wait too long somebody else will hunt it. I have a real hard time hunting places like this by myself but I found that if I wait for when others can go it’s usually too late. Plus I figured with the wind I would not burn the area.

I love the wind but I think yesterday it kept them from flying a lot. After sunset when the wind was starting to die down there was many more that flew over. I’ve never liked the muck because you can get in trouble pretty quickly.

Yes sir, I understand.. I like the wind also, but I'm kind of picky I like it 8 to 15 mph... One thing about high wind, they either do it or get blown away...

We are still killing a few ducks here and there. Nothing crazy but have not had a lot of time. I will be off starting tomorrow till the end of the month. My buddy from Kansas is on the way so hopefully I will have some good hunts to report. Canada had some snow yesterday. Nothing crazy but I’ve seen several small flocks of ducks and some bigger flocks of snow geese heading south. Not crazy numbers but still new birds are always nice.

PorkChop wrote:Well I did a little scouting tonight for some honkers and also for youth season and veteran season which opens up next weekend on the 17th so I just wanted to check the duck situation. Here’s one video. Pretty much unimpressed with the spot. But a couple flocks did come from Highup so they might’ve been out feeding in a field somewhere. I will remain optimistic! But also as I mentioned in the video a lot of them are going to another pothole less than a mile away to the east so they could’ve been in there. There had been a little over 1000 using the one in this video. Pretty much a mixed bag of everything.

So basically they're not in Arkansas yet.
From what I saw it's not surprising that y'all have ducks still. Was wondering about that. Let us know when you freeze up solid
