Looks like a good time was had by all involved! Thankful for your vantage point shared through the lens of the breeding grounds goings on.

Neat to see those white pelicans up that way, that I believe are part of the same crew that migrates down here in the fall.

I believe you are correct. One thing I’ve learned when I am not catching fish, I try to find them, the cormorants and the grebes.

Definitely was a great time but I put on the sunblock a little too late and I am paying the price today!

Well yesterday about 213 in the morning we had a severe thunderstorm roll through. One of my buildings got flooded with rain water and there is an emergency phone that called me. On my way out there as I was driving bye the well my son and I were spraying the day a young fox ran across the road. This morning I went to go check on the hen and she was gone. Found a nest and this is what I found

Found fox tracks nearby in the mud.

This kind of looks more like the work of a skunk though. As I think they usually bite the top of the eggs and suck the yolk out. Fox usually carry the eggs away. Most of them are missing though so it could’ve ate a couple and then took the rest away for a meal later on. No feathers or anything so I believe the hen is still alive.

The surrounding field is canola so it should be harvested here in a few weeks. Once that happens I will take that fox out!

Still seeing new ducklings just about every day. Saw a couple broods yesterday in the area that got the hail so that’s a great thing! here’s a picture of a Hungarian Partridge that was standing in the road.

Starting to see little groups of ducks flying around every day. These guys ( sharptail grouse) were on one of my lease roads. There were some other young ones that were hiding in the grass.

This is the second time this guy has been hiding under the stairs. He actually started coming closer to me after a little bit. Wonder if he’ll let me pet him someday. Highly doubtful ha ha

PK - do you have an early teal season, and when does your regular duck season begin?

We do not have an early teal season however when our regular season begins we are allowed to shoot two extra bluewing teal for like the first eight days of the season. So we can either shoot eight bluewings or our five mallards one other duck and two blue wings. Basically any legal combination of ducks with the additional two bluewing teal if that makes sense. Our regular duck season begins on 24 September this year and non-residents open up on 1 October. The youth and veteran season is the weekend before.

My duck boat has 24 flabeau floaters in it.
Charged and ready to go.
I'll start scouting about a week before season but there's no point. I've patterned the local geese for decades they fly out. Fly around lake then come back to the flats.
Your odds are 50:50 they'll either decoy or not.
They tend to buzz your spread at about 25 yards so blast em. You get maybe one or two chances a year.

There’s a Prairie Trail that I can take to shorten up my drive checking wells and it’s been too wet but today I was able to drive down it and saw at least three new groups of ducklings! Just about every pothole now has at least one family. Not a lot of mallards but plenty of other species! I hope you guys get to see the great numbers I am seeing! Lots of potholes in standing crop that I can’t see right now so I’m guessing there’s plenty of birds in those as well. Harvest is behind so most of them will stay put until given a reason to fly around.

Hopefully the production north of me in Canada is just as good if not better.

Honkers are starting to come out of hiding. The early season starts tomorrow but I have not found anything worth setting up on. But I’ll be paying close attention to them now!

Found a very small honker feed. When it grows to 200 plus the kids and I will get some fresh meat!

Looks like I will have to get the pole saw out and do some tree trimming to get the goose trailer out or use the duck trailer

Had 48° this morning on the thermometer. Obviously not a huge cool down but probably enough to send a few birds south. Also super foggy this morning here so not very good for scouting for honkers!
