2022 Preseason

Well by my perspective things are looking good! Definitely need some more rain to keep these potholes full. However I do like less water in the fall just because it concentrates the birds more.

Today I spotted four new duck broods. Here is one of them. Not the greatest picture as I just zoomed in from a video I took and did a screenshot. Counted nine ducklings. All the duck Broods I have spotted this spring have been eight or more ducklings. If you notice in the picture you can see on the edge of the water all the brown that extends out. That was all water initially this spring so it gives you an idea of how much the water has dropped. That was just sheet water though. They farmed that last year. So even though the water is drying up we are doing way better than the last two if not three Springs.

Keep those gadwall/gray ducks multiplying, please. Lot of Louisiana hunters banking on 'em

Coastal Bama too! It is about the only duck we see much of anymore, and those numbers keep shrinking year after year. The only population I'm seeing grow here is the local Greater Goose population.

Thankfully my area has been spared of the big storms but we are still getting rain which is good. Still need a lot more rain but we are doing a lot better than the last couple years!
I am a pumper and I do a little roustabouting when needed.

I get to see these guys just about every day. Last couple years this area had been brown. The buffalo are happy this year eating that lush green!

Notice the old goose tub. Most likely from the 80s. For the most part the local population is doing well and these goose nests don’t get maintained anymore. Some landowners will give you an earful if you ask to put those nests back in business.

That's something we don't see in LA, though it's my understanding they were once native here. Coat had to be a bitch in summer.

My son and I we’re spraying one of the wells for weeds and he flushed a hen. Still more eggs to hatch!! Stopped spraying that area so she would have some more cover.

kinda jealous of your vantage on the breeding grounds. Once planned to make ND my next stop after SWLA because I was an upland bird hunter first and formost, but bobwhites (that are now all but gone) kept me down here until a Cajun gal nailed me down.

Don't suppose you're near the Art Brazda Wildlife Management Area? Art was a good friend and great source during my writing phase.

No it is about 3 hours from me. I do at times coyote hunt not so far from there so next time I’m down that way I will see about getting you a picture of the sign.
