Deer season 2022-23

Deer season 2022-23

Postby Anotherone » Sun Dec 11, 2022 6:46 am

What: Louisiana deer (or pig) hunting

When: Saturday, December 10, 2022

Where: 200 acre Pine plantation in Greensburg, LA

Weather: 60-74 degrees, mostly cloudy with light south winds

Who: Gabe, Mark and myself.

Weapons: Savage Axis in 270 Winchester
Savage 110 in 30-06 Springfield
Anderson arms AR15 in 7.62x39

What happened: NOT A THING! Not one of us seen a deer or pig. Fresh tracks in the mud, must be feeding at night(I hate when they don’t play fair). Cooler temps starts this Thursday, might try again Saturday. Good times nonetheless.

Put out a water dish with some water.
If that don't work use beer.
You'll have the hogs waking you up in your stand.

I could have used some cold Coronas with a bag of those bacon flavored tater chip’s yesterday while sitting in that shootin shack.

You'd eat the whole bag. It's hard to stop.

I had some Steen’s syrup infused smoked sausage the other day from Krotz Springs, LA. It was like eating tater chips, couldn’t stop until it was gone.

I never thought much about steens but I'd assume it's used in sweet tea.

Steen's is the secret ingredient in many things South Louisianan. Have yet to make the mess, but have been assured that duck fillets soaked in Steen's and dropped into a white-hot cast iron skillet (outside, of course) are well worth the clean-up...

Can't imagine it, but "never say never," I suppose.

Probably would be the new go-to at duck camp.

I’ve never tried it in tea to my knowledge but it’s damn good on fried canned biscuits. That reminds me that I need to get to the grocery store today.

What: deer or pig hunting

When: Saturday, 12-17-22

Where: pine plantation, Greensburg, LA

Who: Gabe, Mark, Larry and myself

Weather: 40’s-50’s, light rain then partly cloudy with light north wind

Weapons: Savage Axis in 270 Winchester
Savage 110 in 30/06 Springfield
Savage 110 in 270 Winchester
Anderson Arms AR15 in 7.62x39

What happened: Well, we ate good. No deer or pigs spotted but good times were had at the campsite with Mississippi pot deer roast on French bread. The rut hasn’t begun in St Helena Parish and the deer are holding tight in the pines, they don’t even want to come out and nibble on corn. I guess I’ll hit the swamp one of them frigid mornings later this week, just to see.

Good times were had at the campsite... I miss deer camp, I've had some good times there also...
I lived in a tree from 1982 to 1998, I know that's dramatic but I'm sure you understand...
Our dear rut around here is pretty much over...
Good luck on that frigid morning
