I've read similar comments from you Rick, and I believe them to be true... I don't lose many anymore, one or two a year... I also don't hunt around floating Marsh..
I will say this, the ones that get away do haunt me...

Put four or five guns in second crop rice for September teal, and the odds are super high something chipped is going to beat the dogs by hauling tail down a combine run without leaving scent for them to track. Maybe a few "somethings" if the gun barrels a crooked.

Oh, I can imagine Rick...
This Green head was very lively when he hit the water, and I gave him two more barrels... I stung him pretty bad, and all he kept out of the water was his head like they do... But he was headed towards the bank and I kept an eye on him through the binoculars actually thought we'd get him when he hit the bank... He stopped short of the actual land and just set in the water grass for a while... Then started down the bank away from us so we went and got the boat and tried to round him up, to no avail as you already know...
One thing about hanging out on these forums that I have learned through Reading is there are a whole lot of hunting scenarios that I don't have a clue about, floating Marsh, and rice being two of them... Or a commercial blind....

I'm sure mine haven't been the best of dogs, but they've all learned to lose some birds, one way or another. I'm also absolutely certain something out there needs the birds that beat us much worse than we do, but still...

It's not about the meat, it's about these two words...

After I clean my birds I put them right back in the boat... Kick them out on the bank before the next morning's hunt... Sometimes I get to drive by those carcasses the next morning or the next, shine a light over there and they'll be a set of eyes or several looking back at me... Makes me grin, you guys clean them up...

The trim on my boat has been working intermittently the last few trips duck hunting... I decided to "fix" with it yesterday in the rain, so that I would be good to go this morning...Managed to make it worse and didn't fix the problem so decided not to hunt.... Finally found the two broken wires, they were inside a shield and it held them together most of the time... I was able to get two butt splices on them we'll see how long they last???

Trigger and I hunted this morning.. four green, two grays...
IMG_20221130_085935052_HDR~2.jpg

Yesterday we had a strong northwest wind most of the day, one of those days that you see trash cans blown over on your trip home from work...
We have new doves on the highline wires.... I spotted several new gray ducks when scouting  , have to see where they end up in a few days...

Okay, here's a new one for me... This morning Trigger and I hunted the same place we shot the five green the other day, and had one get away... This morning we pull up to the spot we're going to hunt, I go to the bank and kick out all my gear and Trigger... Dogs are a pain in the butt in the boat while trying to put out decoys... I throw out the decoys, and drive around to the other side of this peninsula to ditch the boat, like I always do... Usually while I'm throwing out decoys, Triggers sniffing and smelling the bushes and doing all the stuff she does in the dark... I get to the other side of the peninsula and pull the boat up to the bank, secure it and no Trigger... She's always there waiting (kind of like hurry up we need to get this show on the road).... Anyway I start walking down the bank and call her name a couple times figuring she'll show in a few minutes... I start putting the blind together and not long after I set up her Mo Marsh blind here she shows up with a this green head lively as all get out... I've had dogs find birds on the way out, but never at 5:30 in the morning... I think this might be the bird I wounded the other day ??
