Teal Season - 2022

Teal Season - 2022

Postby MARSH BEAR » Mon Sep 12, 2022 8:12 am

Date: Saturday, Sept 10, 2022 - first day of teal season 2022

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 73 degrees, wind NE 5 - 8 mph, clear, got warm about 9:00

Started off slow, did not shoot until after sun rise. After yesterday's no teal sighting my expectations were low. First group of 5 teal came in perfect to the decoys and spinners, no reason all 5 should not have died, but we only got 3. We had a few more opportunities with decoying teal but our shooting woes continued. I blame it on bad shotshells. We did see some high flying groups of teal to give us hope. 5 blinds hunted today and we were high blind

Total: 7 bluewing teal (I think all drakes)

Thanks for the report MB, and much better than a DNS morning!
Hope the action picks up for you over the next two weeks.

Date: Sunday, Sept 11, 2022

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 73 degrees, wind NW 5 10, less humidity

Saw more teal today than yesterday, most of the teal were going from east to west in groups of about 20. We did not have a group of 20 decoy, but we did have groups of 5 and 10. We shot better today, and had a few more opportunities. Abby went on a long retrieve chasing a wounded teal. The teal went into a Roseau patch, and all you could hear was Abby breaking cane chasing the teal. it wore her out, and she did not get the teal. We had an alligator swim into our decoys, it appeared to be about 5' long, that was the end of Abby's retrieving for the day.

Total: 12 bluewing teal (again high blind)

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 75 degrees, wind E 9 - 10

The wind kept us comfortable until about 8:30 then it got almost hot.
Very few teal in our area. We had 3 blinds hunting today, and we were high blind. We did not shoot until after 7:30, we had 3 groups of 5 - 6 teal come almost land on the spinners. Buddy and I have put out 4 spinners each day, while the other blinds are putting out 1 or 2 spinners.

Total: 10 - bluewing teal

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 75 degrees, wing E 6-10 again

Buddy and I have hunted our #3 blind the last 3 hunts and have been high blind each day, so today another group wanted #3, and we went to #9 only hunted 1 day last weekend. Good thing we were on time getting to the blind, shoot time was 6:30 and by 6:45 we had 6 teal in the blind, and no other blind had shot yet. Buddy and I both shot well, but the teal were all over the spinners. The water is very high in our marsh, but #9 blind is our most shallow pond, Abby was able to touch bottom today. Again high blind today.

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 75 degrees, wind E 10mph

Only 2 binds hunted to day, the other group wanted #9 blind we had yesterday, so we went back to #3. Very slow morning did not see many teal moving. We all decided we would quit hunting at 9:00. At 8:50 we only had 4 teal come in all morning, and we got all 4. we have walkie talkie radios to talk with the other blinds, and at 8:50 the other blind said they were picking up, Buddy and I said we were waiting until 9:00, at 8:55 six teal swarmed the spinners and we got 5. the other blind only had 1 teal for the day.

Total: 9 bluewing teal.

PS - Saturday one of the other blinds killed 2 greenwing teal, the first for us this season.

Never heard of the walkie talkie. I imagine every time a shot rings out the talking starts

Walkies common amongst SW la marsh clubs, especially for coordinating runs to blinds, mechanical issues, etc.

Nice hunts MB !

This is what we use. There are 6 more out there.
We fan out and try for certain holes.
Communication is a key part of the game.
At about 4:15 we're talking boat to boat.
If they get that Charlie R hole I'm heading that way unless its a west side day.

Cell phones killed the fine art of blowing smoke through a radio. My Midland GXTs have sat idle since the grandsons got too old to enjoy playing with them...

There's no signal on the wma.
Every once in a while a text comes thru or goes out but not reliably.
I suspect this fall I'll find that they put up a tower.
Every year it gets a little better.
I post pics in camp at 4-mile.

Cell phone signal is always weak in our marsh, but some days no service.

If you zoom in maybe you see the gate.
The gw parks over by it and gets signal.
So the legend is that if you crawl up onto the gate your call will go thru. Complete bs.

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 77 degrees, wind NNE 5 mph and stayed there

Saw more teal moving this morning than any other morning this year, BUT they did not respond to any thing. We did not shoot until after 7:30. The first 2 weekends the teal decoyed well, today is was only pass shooting. Larry shot better than I thought he would considering he doesn't get many opportunities at his place We hunted until 10:00. The deer flies were terrible today, we normally don't get them in the marsh.
Larry was a LSU football player, flew jets in Vietnam and Desert Storm, he has plenty of stories, some of which are repeated often.

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 77, wind 0 - 8mph from the NW changing to ENE, a little fog going to the blind

All of the teal we saw yesterday must have been leaving, we only saw about 10% of what we saw yesterday. Again only passing shots, and only had singles in shooting range. I was really hoping for more ducks for Larry.

Sunday, Sept 25, 2022 - last day of teal season

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 77, again, Wind NW 3 - 8 mph

Did not shoot until after 8:00, thought it would be DNS day. Saw less teal today than yesterday. Only had 3 opportunities to shoot and Larry missed one in his face, and I was not able to shoot at. A nice cold front coming this week, should have teal coming in this week  I think we had a cold front come through the week teal season ended the last 2 years.

Arkansas sets their teal seasons to open on whatever day has them hunt until the end of the month. For some reason Louisiana is consumed with weekend openers and finishes.

User pressures dictate that, from my past discussions with admin. Most are strongly opposed to week day openers or closers, citing lost weekends.

Normally won't kill but a deer fly or two at my marsh blind all teal season, but they were a daily aggravation this one. And had a new and unusual thing for my eyelids.
