2022 - 2023 DUCK SEASON

Postby MARSH BEAR » Mon Nov 07, 2022 9:08 am

Date: Saturday, Nov 5, 2022 - Youth and veterans hunt

Hunters: William, Matthew, Christian and Me

Temp: at 7:00 am - legal shoot time it was raining and still very dark. We waited until 8:00 am to get in the boat. It was 57 degrees wind 8 - 10 mph NE

This was Christian's first duck hunt, he is 9 and for some reason could not remember anything about his gun. He had on a light coat but it kept getting in his way. I was very pleased with the ducks Rick sent us. We were in our largest blind, but still a little crowed for 4 hunters, so I let the 2 older boys shoot for a while, then Christian and I would hunt, then back and forth. The two older boys shot well. Christian did kill a few teal that landed so he was happy, happy, happy.

Total: Gadwall - 15, Greenwing teal - 4, Pintail - 1, Wigeon - 1

Sunday, Nov 6, 2022 - last day of youth, veterans hunt

Hunters: William, Matthew, Hayden and Me

Temp: 68 degrees, wind 0 to 4 mph plenty of mosquitos

Christian had a football game on Sunday, so he had to leave and was replaced by William's brother Hayden, who is 14 but has never hunted before. Hayden did great for his first hunt - first shot was a Gadwall that he dropped stone dead. We hunted the same blind as yesterday with the same rotation. Again the older boys shot well and Hayden got his limit on his first duck hunt - I told him this does not happen every time.

Totals: Gadwall - 10, Greenwing teal - 12, Wigeon - 2

And Pops was worried: "Youth weekend looks to be warm, with no fronts coming this week it may be a very slow hunt for the boys."

Date: Saturday, Nov 12, 2022 - opening day of duck season

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 50 degrees, wind 25+mph from the north, cloudy

It was tough getting he boats off the ramp, we have to back out due North, with white caps hitting the back of the boat. Putting out spinners was also a challenge.
We hunted our #10 blind which is our most consistent blind, but it is on a large pond, we had white caps all morning, but enough ducks were curious to come check us out. We saw ducks moving all morning, lots of high ducks. It was a challenge shooting in that much wind.

Totals: 8 - Gadwall, 2 - Greenwing teal, 1 - Bluewing teal, 1 - Wigeon

Date: Sunday, Nov 13, 2022

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 38 degrees, wind 5 - 15mph NE, sunny

Had a little boat trouble, motor was running on only 1 cylinder for about 1/2 of the boat ride then it cleared, but put us past LST getting to the blind. Only saw about 10% of ducks today compared to yesterday. It was slow until about 8:00 then saw a few more ducks, and had some very professional decoying ducks.
Today was one of my worst shooting days I can remember, I blame the heavier than normal coat I was wearing. It got so bad, all I could do was laugh at myself. I had a single Gadwall decoy straight in on my side, I had time to get ready, then I shot, and I shot, and I shot then the Gadwall flew away.

Totals: 8 - Greenwing teal, 3 - Gadwall, 1 - Pintail

Only a duck hunter would be boating away from landing with engine trouble.

Rick - plenty help in the marsh if needed, motor has done that before - coil gets damp, takes a little while to dry.

What's bent is in the brain.
If I miss I have a perfect sight picture and I missed because I was "aiming again".
If I hammer one stone dead I can't recall any sight picture because it was instinctive pointing.
If I'm missing it's because I'm aiming again.

Yep, sometimes we just overthink it, and those misses sting, but they keep us wanting to go back as much at the hits do!!!!!

The how to quit part is most important.
Focus on the duck.
If you've done your practicing your body and mind does the rest. It's really that simple. Focus on the duck

Date: Friday, Nov 18, 2022

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: Chilly 44 degrees wind 10 - 12 NE

Our ducks left the area, we saw very few ducks moving anywhere, and very little shooting heard.
We were lucky, enough ones and twos came to give us a decent hunt. We had 4 blinds hunting today and we were high blind

Total: 6 - Greenwing teal, 4 - Gadwall

Temp: 44 degrees, wind NE 10mph

The weatherman said rain should start between 10:00 and 11:00, again he was wrong, it started before 8:00am. Cell service is very iffy in our marsh and with the heavy clouds could not get a signal. Early we were seeing a few more ducks than yesterday, but not many wanted to come and play. We sat in the rain for 2 hours hoping it would let up, but it never did, we all decided to make a run for it back to the boat landing, it was a cold wet ride. It rained all day, from a steady rain to a light drizzle until 8:00pm.

The teal came back! We had flights of 15 - 20 teal buzz us most of the time we were there, but they were not slowing down, you better be ready or you did not get a shot.
