My thoughts as well. When they usually put water on it? Right before opener?
I'm going to ask for water by first Saturday of November. Youth hunt is the 12th.

Nice setting Eric
Long drive, but setting your own schedule and having the things you need, top the hell out of airport aggravation.
Enjoy that cool weather!!!!!

Eric's log book

Postby Ericdc » Sat Oct 22, 2022 5:37 pm

Work day #1 at lease

Tommy and I met in Monroe this morning and headed north. Sunny and South wind was kicking (bad day to be a speck usually).

First time I've put decoys out on dry ground, but much easier than wading in flooded field. Will adjust and add more once pumping starts, but got a good many placed today.
Image

Pumped about a foot of water out the pit, and Tommy got his tank in place for the heater.
Image
Image

Excited about all the Johnson grass growing around pit, no doubt seeded in from my brushing heavily with it for 3 straight years. Will probably cut enough of it to provide for the initial brush job.

Image

Boards in, farmer going to take care of tarps once pumping starts.
Image

Excited about my new ARE shell and the benefits it'll provide this season.
Image

Met up with Tricia and the in laws at local park on way home.

Amos seems excited about it too, Rick.

Going to get those oats in the ground Monday at the deer lease before the forecasted rain.

I don't think I've seen a spread put out dry...add water later. Genius.

Pumping starts Monday on our farm. Should be showing water due speck opener, which will be a work day / maybe speck hunt depending on weather.

Should be in good shape for youth opener on the 12th.

That's fair, we won't be using mojos at the pit this year.

After year one with spinners, I didn't use them anywhere after September teal until moving to my present location in our marsh. Beyond the Amish issue, I found them counterproductive - but got over it when everyone else in the marsh was limiting on green-wings, while my folks bird-watched distant flights. Could I not hard-wire them for absolute control and stop them white down, I'd still be sacrificing regular season teal. (Re-doing their pond-water camo was the first of this off-season's paint projects.) But I can claim no ethical high-ground.

Interesting, because my last year 2019-2020 at the lease I was able to get back into this year, we didn't use mojos all season and killed more ducks than we had in the 6 years we were up there from 2014-15, and 55% of them were green winged teal. that year taught me a lot and helped me get over the feeling that I needed them.

Visibility probably makes a difference though, I wax hunting roughly 60 acres of slick water vs your marsh mudhole.

The big open slick water will bring them all day long without flashing. It's my favorite for the farm blind.....and looks like the neighbors will have that this year, grrrr

Had an interesting trip to Jones yesterday. Borrowed a buddy's trailer to transport my 4-wheeler to the shop.

While traveling north on 165 near Sterlington the passenger side trailer tire shreds. I manage right limp it off the of the busy highway and into a large gravel parking lot.
Image

I call my buddy to learn that the spare mounted on trailer was dry rotted.

So I get the shredded one off, and decide to go ahead and get that spare replaced as well. (Ive still got an hour drive to the shop where I'm headed)

So I buy 2 new tires and get them mounted at Sam's tires in Monroe. Big thanks to those guys for how quickly they got me back going. (Had this happened on I-20 or closer to Jones in very rural morehouse parish I would have been in a real bind).

I manage to get to the shop right around sunset. Did see 1 group of specks flying south.

Wasn't able to get the blind brushed like I planned, but lease partner Tommy got the last of the decoys dropped off at pit. Tommy took some pics of pumping progress.

Rain tonight should help too.

I'll probably go up next Friday to get it ready for following mornings youth hunt.
