Not yet. I'm waiting on a very local trainer to give me a heads up on a litter. Going on 16, Ellie is still acting like a pup in some ways, and like you I would love to snap my fingers and have another round with her. If we get to hunt this year I'll bring to the camp for company and take her out to the blind to use her nose in the thick grass. She'll enjoy the boat rides and time at the camp.

That's an incredibly long run for a Lab and quite a blessing in its own right. Poor Marsh isn't much more than half that and too worn out for much beyond short work on the turf - and that may be out of the question this year, too, thanks to the saltwater that could soon have him yacking himself into dehydration. Would carry fresh for him but wouldn't count on his opting to avoid the salt.

Caught my dog lapping up the little water we had on the last weekend of teal season, that was definitely salty. Figured he’d be throwing up later but didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Didn’t think to prep and bring fresh for the hunt since we never deal with salt

I received this picture just moment ago from an aquantince combining rice in SW La. He said they're following him around like ergrets.

Makes me want to drive to Thornwell. Even back when specks were thick, seeing them chase combines wasn't very common.

I would if I could. They're pumping the fields with a deep well as soon as they finish cutting. Shollow fill this evening.. They're pouring in.

that is awesome!! Didn't know they'd act like that (egrets to fresh cut grass/rice).

Report I got from boots on ground in Arky for their early opener is "lots of birds mostly all in one place". I'm sure they'll go scattering when 12 guns/per blind start popping.

This will be another year when fresh water is the best possible ag land bait. Probably more so than any in memory.

Suspect that one place is located just north of I-40.

That is neat. Thank you for sharing Dave! Is that a ratoon rice crop? Secondly, I wonder if this is an indictment of the landscape and just how little food is available with all of the fall tillage.

Passed through "east Thornwell," 380 and 382, on my way to a Welsh grandson's ball game around 6 and saw nary a bird. Should have tried 14 to 99 and up. Have been seeing an occasional few passing high the past couple days and recon more are coming with the front.

Yes, it is ratoon. He said the yield was almost as good as the first crop. I would imagine it will be slim-pickens for the fowl this year so they may be taking advantage of the fresh cut.

Blake and I made it down to the camp yesterday evening for a meet and possible ride in our marsh this morning with the new landowner. The new landowner and Randal had met at our boat launch yesterday evening and Randall had already decided he would not back his trailer into the thick gumbo mud off of the end of the rocked area. The water's lower than the last time I was there and is about a foot past the end of the rock base.
Randal and I pulled our boats to the property this morning and was to meet with the new landowner for 8:00 am. He didn't show up. He uses an outboard in the marsh he usually hunts, and I think Randal's words had convinced him that it wouldn't be a good idea here, especially at this water level. We were going to watch his attempt to launch if he had chosen to do so.
I also didn't want to try a launch and besides that, I would not be able to get to our blind with this water level, anyway.
With no measurable rain seen in the long-range forecast I don't see us hunting this year..... Maybe 2nd or 3rd split?

On top of that the AC on the camper was making noise and later refused to start so I shut it down. Luckily it gave us enough time to cool things down before bedtime, and that it decided to act up while I was there possibly saving the compressor. It was a bit warm in there this morning. I think I have it narrowed down to the two start capacitors and will order those this evening. We'll find out next weekend if my troubleshooting found the correct issue.

So many leases down there and in the SW AG fields with no water to hunt. The salinity levels are extremely high.

Ovecast, Mid 40's, NNW wind 15 to 20 with spitting rain this morning. Frontal passage with full moon (Waning Gibbous)...... Depression is begining to set in. I sure hope we get a deluge soon.

Expect to start hearing "T'ousands" duck reports soon, but last I was in what Cherry Ridge pumped, the only readily identifiable new arrivals were poule d'eaus and maybe a spoon bump.

No ducks being seen in Chenier, either. Those that had a bit of water north of 82 with the last high tide (Salt) may be dry this week.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) would like to remind waterfowl hunters that the harvest of mottled ducks is prohibited in the first 15 days of the regular duck season in both the East and West zones. In the final 45 days of the season, the daily bag limit is one.
Waterfowl hunting begins Nov. 11 in the West Zone and Nov. 18 in the East Zone. Nov. 26 would be the first day in which a mottled duck could be harvested in the West Zone and Dec. 3 in the East Zone.
Mottled ducks may not be harvested during the special youth and veteran hunting days that are held before the beginning of duck season in both zones. The West Zone youth and veterans only days will be Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 4-5) and the East Zone youth and veterans only days will be Nov. 11 and Feb. 3. Youth and veteran hunters would be able to harvest one mottled duck on Feb. 3 in the East Zone.
The West Gulf Coast population of mottled ducks has shown a 65% decline since 2009 in Louisiana, resulting in the recommendation to reduce harvest of this species in the Mississippi Flyway by 50%.
For more information on the new regulations, go to https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/assets/Re ... or-web.pdf or contact LDWF Waterfowl Program Manager Jason Olszak at jolszak@wlf.la.gov.

Been knowing about that but doesn't mean I have to like it. Early season mottleds are perfect for a kid's first duck and of course only get smarter as season progresses.

I'm glad they are applying the restriction consistently if we are truly considered about the species.

Interesting that our season in Texas only has mottled ducks prohibited for the first 5 days and that youth were allowed to shoot one of them. All that being said, as hard as they have had it this summer with the drought, I will probably think long and hard before I pull the trigger.

That's particularly interesting in that, when our mottled limit was cut from three to one, I recall being told it was to help compensate for their decline in Texas.

The videos were posted to a FB waterfowl group with member only previldges. I'm trying to get the OP to send them to me direct for posting outside of FB.
