It's my understanding that some of the marsh in what I think BKirk's lease area has been flooded by opening some sort of control from the tidal portion of the Mermentau. Curious if he's among those so blessed?

I replied somewhat to your comment in DCs thread. I tried to find the new ditch on Google maps I was speaking of but couldn’t , it was very narrow and the hurricane may have caused it to be unnoticeable now. It wasn’t much of a ditch but it definitely came from the East

Rode up to the farm today. Another dry summer and early fall results in a lot of plowed up fields. Thankfully, our farmer was open to our preference for post harvest rice field preparation. He ran a fire through it and a light chop.

Should have very shallow water and clods.

Johnson grass around the blind came up again real thick providing another bumper crop of grass to use for brushing pit.

Very good north wind while I was there around lunch time, no specks seen or heard but have seen reports from Dave's bayou and other places south of us that are holding some on pumped water.

Called farmer while I was there, thanked him for the field prep and asked that we have water by November 4th, to which he said, no problem.

Brought Amos along

Productive evening at the farm. Ran into farm hand and our specific field is referred to as "the 86", so I'll be referring to it that way from now on.

We brought decoys, panel's and other stuff needed for the season. With the dry conditions, it allows us to drive trucks to the pit and unload there.

Way less decoys this year, will use 5-6 dozen and pick up each hunt.

We got all our divider panels brushed that we use to break up the outline of the pit. Also created several bundles with zip ties to use to brush pit.

Pumped out about knee deep level of water out of pit.

Most importantly, pumps are running and should be showing good water by the front early next week. Looking forward to speck opener next Saturday.

Saw what I believe were a few small groups of specks in the air near sunset west of us while driving back home.

Know for a fact there are a good many birds SW of us in the little Missouri loop area northeast of Mer Rouge. This is very typical for early fall.

This Saturday is our rifle season opener and it's going to be warm, but I'll make a morning hunt anyway.

Got an old logging set cleaned off to plant additional food plot to hopefully make my little 54 acre lease more attractive.

Have several bucks on camera including a very old 6 point.

Preseason

Postby Ericdc » Sat Nov 04, 2023 2:24 pm

Date: November 4, 2023 east zone goose opener

Time: left at 1p

Location: the 86

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: dead calm till about time we packed up and it was light SW

Temperature: 38-40 then fast warm up

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: lot of birds on our farm yesterday evening.

Waterfowl Activity: birds wanted to be in field north of ours, where they were yesterday, so those guys shot a lot.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: could get them right to sky busting range but not in good range, and I'm not going to shoot them high.

Hunters: me, bob, Tommy, Kevin

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: 30 speck Silo's on south side of blind

Kudos: lots of ducks and geese in area, and real happy with our water.

curses: lost a bird and just couldn't get them close enough to avoid chasing cripples all over. Birds weren't flaring, just hanging up and pulling back to other groups passing through.

Birds By Species:
2 specks shot, recovered 1.

Photo Ops:

Just noticed I posted this in my preseason thread. Guess I'll start a season thread on 18th.

Yes, the water is a blessing, I was frustrated this morning with the lack of wind, but having water is something to be very grateful for.

Date: November 11, 2023

Time: packed up a few minutes after 9

Location: the 86 pit

Cloud Cover: high and solid clouds

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNE 8-12 steady

Temperature: low 50's

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: brought my buddy and his 3 boys, same as last years youth hunt, except youngest (7) came along to observe.

Waterfowl Activity: specks flew all morning. Ducks settled down after about an hour and a half. Couldn't hear any other youth hunters in area. Birds rafted up on field to north of us. Didn't see many teal.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: pair of mallards worked decent, rest acted like season had been open already. Specks getting very hard to kill over water and mixed spreads

Hunters: Shepherd and Asher, with dad Jacob and baby brother Levi.

Guns:

Malfunctions: shepherd shot early on a gadwall that was coming good.

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: brought 2 mojos just to try to get more ducks to work.

Kudos: kids shot several times and we always had birds in the air.

curses: high clouds made everything finicky. Especially specks

Birds By Species: 0

Photo Ops:
Only one I got at about 3:05 am

2 years in a row with them having harsh conditions. Clouds strong north winds both years.

Maybe we can get some sunshine next year.

I hate hunting in cloudy weather, unless it's snowing.
