2023 TEAL SEASON

Postby MARSH BEAR » Sun Sep 17, 2023 3:13 pm

Date: Friday, Sept 15, 2023 - Opening day of teal season

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 77 degrees, wind E - 5 - 7 mph

We have water, but we don't have ducks. There was very little shooting in our area. We had only one opportunity to shoot - 2 greenwing teal came over the decoys, Buddy and I each shot once, 2 dead teal.

Total: 2 - greenwing teal

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 72 degrees, wind N 5-7 mph

We saw a few more teal than Friday, heard a little more shooting, but nothing coming our way. We decided to pick up at 9:00, and at 8:56 3 bluewing teal flew through the decoys. Buddy and I each dropped a teal, the third teal left unharmed. Abby picked up both teal with one pass.

Total: 2 - bluewing teal

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 78 degrees, wind N 9 - 10 mph

Today we saw a few more teal than the previous days, but still nothing great. We had a few more opportunities today, but did not shoot as well as we needed to. Abby picked up 2 teal in one pass twice today, she is really looking for the other downed birds.

Totals: 7 - bluewing teal (should have been more like 10)

Be interesting to see if your opportunities continue to pick up as the ag land shooting continues.

Glad your bird numbers are progressively getting better, and hope that trend continues

Hunters: Me and Abby

Temp: 83 degrees, wind zero - E 3 mph

It was hot, no ducks to be seen - did not see one teal, did see 4 Mottles.

When I was packing up for the camp, I knew my back was trying to tell me not to go, but I am stupid. I got up Friday morning, back still not feeling good, but went on the hunt anyway. I made the hunt and got back to the camp and decided it best to head back home. Not only was I the only hunter, but the only one at the camp.

Stupid me going back to the camp on Wednesday, to hunt Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I will be taking someone else along for help getting the boat out of water - my expectations are very low at this point.

Totals: Zero, none natta.

Hoping you get a push of birds over the next few days for your upcoming long weekend!
Maybe a couple of nights in your bed at home, will give you some relief on your back issue.

I always tell myself it only takes a couple of groups to do it right to make it worthwhile...it rarely plays out that way...

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 75 degrees, wind NE 10 mph mostly clear, big full moon

Saw fewer teal today than yesterday ( hard to believe) One group of 3 flew the decoys, and I got 1, Larry missed. Later we had a single come in and I gave Larry the chance to get him - he wiffed, I was able to get him on the way out. I don't remember seeing another teal.

Totals: 2 - bluewing teal

Date: Saturday, Sept 30, 2023 - last day of teal season

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 80 degrees, wind NE 10 mph - without the wind it would have been hot.

We saw 4 teal all morning, they made a pass on Larry's side of the blind, but he fumbled around and did not get to shoot.

Did not shoot again today

Forgot to mention in Friday's post that Abby made a great retrieve on a wounded teal that kept diving on her. She does not quit.

Next duck hunting adventure - Nov 4, 2023 Youth and veterans hunt - I hope some ducks show up

Your teal season sounds about like mine, glad yall got a few for your (admirable) efforts. We're likewise on the countdown to Nov 4 youth/vet weekend. Front later this week should be good for pushing things in the right direction.
