Preseason 2023- 24

Postby 5 stand » Mon Jul 31, 2023 9:51 pm

Moe was snake bit around 9:00 this evening... Have talked to my retired veterinarian friend that I shoot with on Wednesdays he has started Moe on a regiment of Benadryl and we'll go to the vet in the morning...

Thank you, PorkChop... In 2 hours will give him some more Benadryl and then try to get some sleep, he will sleep in my bedroom to make sure his breathing doesn't become problematic...

The Benadryl seems to be working, he's able to sleep...

Make sure you take his collar off! Have heard of dogs suffocating after snake bites when their neck swells and they still have a collar on. Hope for a speedy recovery for Moe!

Thank you, I have taken his collar off (after you mentioned it)... If he had been bitten anywhere near the neck area we probably would already be at the emergency vet... I think he's going to be okay, he will just have to put up with a miserable week or so?

Two of my three that have been bitten have been in the head, and I'm told that's a good thing. Our cases were copperhead and cottonmouth, and Benadryl was all they needed. I've bottles of the liquid version handy in truck, boat, shell box, backpack and our training bag.

Best of luck with it.

Good info on the Benedryl, I was unaware that would help a dog in a snake bite situation, Thanks!!!!!.

Rick, when I was hunting South of Venice, it surprised me to see the number of Copperheads as opposed to Cottonmouths. I'd never associated them with the swamp, but they are numerous down there, and I killed my share cutting grass and moving pirogues that were stored under the camp.

Big thanks to the ones that are concerned about Moe... He's a lot better this morning swelling going down... My buddy Doc Burd and I have decided to wait on going to the vet, if Rick can heal them with Benadryl so can I...

Pen, I live at the South edge of the Ozark national Forest, so I'm assuming it was a copperhead? We'll just call it a Rattle-headed copper moccasin and that covers everything... It is still amongst the living, I'm sure he's around them daily...Hopefully it was one of those snake avoidance lesson

Good deal. Yes our pointers who have had bites in the same area as Moe had a football heads for about a week. After two or three days they don’t seem to even realize they’re still swollen.

That Benadryl must be awesome, Moe's swelling is almost gone...
He didn't receive much venom?

Thank you very much buddy, it's like Duck Engr said Wow makes no sense to me...
The first black lab I had was a dog named Ebony and she got bit by a cottonmouth, I watched it happen it was sickening... It was on her front leg and it swelled up and quite the ordeal she ended up having a scar the rest of her life on that leg...

I've seen it argued by an expert that Benadryl does no good, and that could well be true with rattlesnake bites. But it's sure seemed to help curb things with my guys and those of friends' we've administered it to.

Can bet I'll be chugging it, if I ever get got.

Pennydog
I mentioned Ebony earlier this was one of the last photos that I have of her she lived to be 14 1/2 years old, she was my smallest lab 48 lb at her fighting weight... Sure does bring back a lot of memories posting this and pulling up that photo...

Pen
I've seen your picture of Pennydog and the one I remember had two dogs in it, was the other dog Dayzeemay? And is she Penny's daughter?

We've had some brutal heat lately but it's supposed to break after today and maybe some rain this evening and tonight... Decided to clean up the boat this morning and see if it would start... That whole process didn't take as long as I thought and we had a cloud bank roll in, so I loaded up the dogs and we went down to the river to play on our big sandbar... It's gone... :o
But we found another one and had a big time, it also has some early tealbird possibilities?
I failed miserably pennydog didn't take any dog pictures, but I ordered vessel view for my boat and I'm sure I'll be down there next week playing with that when it arrives and we'll take some pictures and post them up...

You're not a boat guy?
You're the one that posted up an outboard motor that was hooked to a mud motor, that gives you automatic; boat guy qualifications

I also have a 17 ft welded beer can that I hunt from, I understand...

I stole the info from another person on another forum it seemed like something that I might find useful?

The best way (that I can) describe it, it's a (Mercury motor)device that you hook to your motor that has app capabilities that you Bluetooth? To your device, smartphone, iPad, tablet and it gives you all motor information such as hours of use, all your pertinent info like all temperatures RPMs and I'm sure others that I can't think of right now, maintenance schedules, whatever is in the ECM you can read it?
I've had a beer or two, I should have just said it's Mercury vessel view, Google it...
